Question about USC Film Production application

The USC film production major asks for a 5 minute sample of a work that reflects your aesthetic tastes and intellectual and emotional interests. Given the very brief length of the film, I'm wondering whether it be better to send in a short film, or the beginning of a longer/feature film. The advantage of a short is that it delivers a whole narrative. The advantage of a segment of feature is that it can be more delicately crafted and provocative.

Basically I'm just asking whether it will enervate your chances if your visual sample isn't a complete film. Would an experimental short or a more conventional segment of feature be the wiser choice?

Are you asking about undergraduate admission for fall 2013? If so, the deadline closed for film production in November, and for all SCA applications on Dec 1st.

No I’m asking about admission for fall 2014. I want to start prepping my application early. Can anyone help?

I’d like to know this too.
I’m applying next year as well, and I need to really make a correct/unique choice as my grades my first two years were pretty mediocre/average (though this year they’re amazing).
I know I have a ton of short productions to submit, but I’m wondering if I should submit something from a longer project

What ever best shows your talents as a visual story teller is what you should submit. Given you are starting this early, you have a lot of time to try out several choices. Make 2 or three 5 minute films: show then to MANY people and ask them which is the strongest one. Then edit some more. Pick your very best work and make sure it shows how you think VISUALLY. They can teach you technique, but show them you can tell a story in a very visual and interesting way.

Thanks for the answer man. I’m starting production on a short film next week and already have another 2 scripts lined up but they are all 7-8 minutes which is a bit annoying. I will definitely work on some shorter productions though.
