Question about validity of Sparknotes

i just took the sparknotes diagnostic testing and for this sentence:

The economic cost of purchasing a country home proved too
A B C
great for the struggling family, which had only recently

seen its financial fortunes improve. No error

Isn't the which suppose to be who (cuz its a group of ppl?), and its suppose to be their.
I'm not really good at this, but I think I'm right....plez help out.

No because the noun is "family", which is singular and not person so you can't use "their" or "who".

so even groups of people is referred to as it?

Yeah, don't think of it logically, think of it literally; is a family a person? No, so it doesn't get the pronoun who.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate it.
