What is the negative outcome of accepting a place on the waitlist? If I am admitted from the wailist, can I reject the offer? Thank you

There is nothing negative about accepting the wait list offer.
And yes, if you get accepted you can reject the offer.

Read the FAQ link they provide with your decision.

It seems to me like the only negative is that you will only know for sure whether or not a space is available late in the process of selecting a college. They even suggest turning in the down payment at a separate university, because getting picked off of the waitlist is pretty unpredictable.

To answer your question about rejecting acceptance, Wash U keeps their offer of placement on the waitlist open until May 1st. That means you are likely to have heard from all of your other choices, and if you are still interested in pursuing WUSTL you can accept a spot on the waitlist at that time. You can take your name off of the waitlist at any time, so if you decide on a different college after accepting Wash U’s offer, you can always go that route.

so you will accept the waitlist offer

I have, and I wish you luck in your own decision.

I think that if Wash U appeals to you, and it wasn’t a backup to begin with, you should accept their offer and hope for the best.

Thank you! I will accept it.
