Question and answer for new Cornell parents

How does class selection work for a CALS sophomore transfer?

Quick question about fitness at Cornell. I see there is a fee to join the Cornell Fitness Centers. Are these the only places to work out? Are there any work out facilities/space that do not require a membership fee?

The pool, the indoor track, the gymnasiums, and the great outdoors are all free.

My daughter filled out the acceptance form and mailed the deposit in the pre-paid envelope last Thursday. What next ? Will we get some form of notification that they received it, or an email?

Have you signed up for housing? You should do that before May 1 to get guaranteed housing. You will get NetID in the mail soon (some people said within a week). You then become one of us - the money bag for next 4 years.

Yes, she electronically sent the form in last week as well. So I should expect the NET ID in the regular mail, and that means she is officially “accepted”?

Yes. There are a few things I would do, one is to sign up for a parent ID so you could receive and view the bill online. Sometimes kids forget to forward monthly bill to their parents. Another thing you could do is to sign up for CIP/Tuition Pay Plan. You could opt to pay tuition 12/10/6 even pays. You have missed 12 even pay, but if you sign up soon you could still do 10.

Go to bursar.cornell.edu

What is the typical schedule for new students on move in day? What time should we arrive there and put all of our stuff there and get ready for orientation?

You will get a time slot when you will be able to move in. You won’t be able to move in earlier. Cornell has it down to a science. You’ll be able to pull you car right up to the loading dock. There are upperclassmen there to help you unload and move everything up to your room. They could usually do it in less than 15 min. What’s helpful if you could label all of your boxes and suitcase with your name and room number.

I would try to arrive the night before if you have an early move in time.

My parents don’t have an account on here, so I’ll ask for them:
What is your experience with financial aid packages from year to year? Has it more or less stayed the same? Right now, I’ll be carrying a relatively sizable debt load (~$28,000 by graduation if everything stays the same), but if my grant $ drops for the next three years, I’m done for. There’s just no way I can have ~$100,000 in debt and go to med/grad school.

Is there any advantage to getting a checking account at that bank in the bookstore?

No, not that I know of. My daughter has a checking acct at our bank, it allows me to transfer money into her acct. There is a Cornell Card, which has a 850 limit she uses to buy various things around Cornell. She has charged seasonal hockey ticket to the card.

Your financial aid package stays around the same unless something happens (Your parent(s) gets a promotion, gets fired, a sibling enters/graduates from college).

woody: i bank with bank of america simply b/c that was the only bank that was available both in ithaca and back home in texas…

they have great student packages and my parents can just take my checking account # and deposit funds :)

^^Thanks everyone. Keep this thread alive…I’m sure i will have a hundred more questions before August!

So I should get a M&T or CFCU Community Credit Union? I currently have a bank account but the balance of it is like 50 cents. haha… When I visited cornell, there was a lot of people waiting in line to get serve at the Cornell store. I imagine that it would be easier to get access from these banks since it is on campus.

M&T might not be a bad choice, as they have branches in Maryland as well.

Not sure if people are aware of this…If you can’t have an acct at your parents bank, there is another easy way for parents to transfer money into your acct with no fee. That is to use PayPal. You could link your bank acct with PayPal, then send/receive money. It only takes a few days to get money into your bank acct. I have used it to send birthday money to my niece and nephews. It’s very nice for them to get an email that says “You have just received a PayPal payment.”

@ CayugaRed, yeah I am thinking about getting an M&T bank now :). What bank service is the ATM operated on? Is it M&T? Or is it universal, such that it does not charge you a fee when you use the ATM, even though you may have a different bank account.

there are M&T ATMs on campus and in collegetown…and at RPCC (north campus)…

Bank of America has ATMs in noyes(west), collegetown (student agencies), and downtown ithaca…
