I’m still waiting for UMass to give me my decision but I just wanted to know how the aid is for Out Of State students.
For those who got in OOS was the aid any good? Like did you get great merit based scholarships or need-based?
I really wanna go to UMass but i’m afraid the aid might be bad and Student Loans will be eminent because the tuition is $41,750!!! thats $20,860 per semester!
My son was accepted in the first wave in December. We are OOS and he bot 10,000 per year academic scholarship. I don’t know what your stats are, or your financial situation, but my sons scholarship was the highest I know of for OOS.
I believe $12,000 is the max OOS merit scholarship. Don’t forget cost of travel and books and remember that dorms are not open over vacations and breaks unless you pay extra to live in a 9-month dorm.
Not to be blunt, but instate kids are subsidized by the taxpayers of Massachusetts. If you attended the flagship in your state, you would be similarly subsidized. OOS students are looked upon by UMass as a revenue source. There is a reason why OOS have to pay more.
@newengland2012 so the $12,000 is included in the finical aid with the grants? @MADad if OOS students is MA’s revenue why is the cap only $12,000? Doesn’t it take 2 years for a student to to qualify for in-state tuition?
Whatever merit aid they give you should be listed in the grants section of your package. Residency is based on where you live year round – just going to school in MA won’t qualify you. If you are a dependent they will look at where your parents live and pay taxes. As @MADad said, OOS students are a profit center for UMass Amherst so they rarely have full need met. A lot of OOS students seem to get about half their need met including federal loans. Good luck
