Question for anyone who self-studied AP Bio

This is my AP Bio teacher's first year, and although he's a great guy and a good teacher, he's going very, very slowly and I don't think we'll be able to cover anywhere near all of the content in time for the test. Right now we are just beginning mitosis, and we didn't do ecology over the summer like many other CCers. I would really like to get at least a 4 on the test, preferably a 5, and was wondering what the best route for self-studying would be. Should I just read through a prep book (I have Cliffnotes) several times, should I read my entire textbook and just get far ahead of the class, should I use course-notes (this helped me with USH last year), or should I try another approach? My teacher is very detail-oriented, so we move quite slowly, but I'm not sure how detail-oriented the exam is in comparison. Our textbook is LIFE, and we've only gone through the first 9 chapters and the basics of evolution. Thanks for any advice you can provide!

Memorizing terms is essential for AP Bio, and if you’re teacher won’t end up covering half the book, you’re going to be missing a ton. My suggestion: read through cliffs and create flashcards of terms you won’t have time to cover. Then, during April, start reading the other half of your text. Hopefully come May, you will have covered everything- even if not in as much detail as your teacher.

Good luck!

I’m in the same situation as you with the pacing of the course because it doesn’t seem like we covered much material (12 chapters). But that is expected from our teacher, because she pretty much told us that she NEVER finishes the whole curriculum (depth > breadth). I’m kinda planning on using Cliffs for everything that we do not cover (sometime around March) and I guess, just build on that by using the textbook for anything I feel like I need help/more clarification with.

Unfortunately, I don’t have much a plan set in stone at this point (I’m already having issues with AP Gov lol). I’m just gonna see how far we get in January and work something out. (I’m hoping we cover ~20 chapters by Feb)

thanks for the advice! btw for ap govt just use course-notes.com - covers 90% of it

AP comp gov? Or AP American gov?

US Government…

Oh, I’m taking that next year. Studying for comp gov this year and got excited :P

I studied AP bio last year. I would recommend sparknotes study pack for the practice tests- they were most like the real exam. Plus it comes with extremely useful flashcards. I ended up with a 4 on the exam, which I mostly attribute to not having a lab portion. But I only started studying for it two weeks before the exam.

MEMORIZE. One word of advice I can give you.
