I was wondering what general elective you guys took... Basically I have Calc 3, chem, rhet 105 and I need a general elective...I have absolutely no idea which one to pick. I am horrible at things like history so I'd rather not take a class like that.
So what classes do you think are easy?

yankeesfan6792,

I’m not sure about easy, but an important consideration for choosing a Gen Ed course is how many Gen Ed requirements it fulfills. Many available courses fulfill more than one, and if memory serves correctly, some even fulfill three. With Gen Eds, you’re trying to fulfill your degree requirements in various areas, so pick a two-fer, or maybe even a three-fer.

Yes, the way it works is that you may need a total of 18 Gen Ed hours but you can potentially fulfill all 18 of those with only 12 hours of course work if you take classes that meet multiple Gen Ed requirements (you don’t get credit for more than the hours you actually take, you just eliminate the Gen Ed requirements). Go here and explore the Gen Ed listings: https://my.illinois.edu/uPortal/render.userLayoutRootNode.uP?&uP_sparam=activeTabTag&activeTabTag=Academics&uP_fname=illinois-ssdt-courseinformationsuite&pltp_action=genedCatView. For example you will find that Anthropology 103, a 3 hour course, counts as fulfilling 3 hours toward your western cultures requirement, 3 hours toward your non-western cultures requirement, and 3 hours toward your social sciences requirement. (Not suggesting you actually should take Anthro 103; important though is to try to take classes that meet at least two Gen Ed requirements).

drusba, I am a bit confused about the gen ed requirements for engineers. Even if we meet the 18 hour Gen Ed requirements with only 12 hours of courses, will we still need to take two more Gen Eds to accumulate 18 hours?

You have the university as a whole gen ed hours and course requirements and the engineering college’s required number of gen ed hours. Go here for infoprmation: https://wiki.engr.illinois.edu/display/ugadvise/Liberal+Education+Electives

You have to complete 18 hours total to meet the engineering college’s total requirement. However, if you finish off the university as a whole requirements of 6 humanities, 6 in social studies, and 3 each in western and non-western civilization by taking only 12 hours (using courses that meet two or three requirements at once), you can then complete the remaining 6 gen ed required hours for engineering off a list created by the engineering department, which list actually includes some engineering and business courses: https://wiki.engr.illinois.edu/display/ugadvise/Liberal+Education+Course+List

Thank you drusba! Your reply is clear and informative.

I chose Macroeconomics and Archeology of Death (180)

You have to take either Macro or Micro as a gen ed for Mechanical Engineering, and Archeology of Death is a really easy class, according to past students.

You also need to take ENG100 (it’s like an 8 week engineering intro class)
