Question for my friend

Hi, one of my friends got a 770 on the SAT II Chem test this June.

I asked him if he was going to retake Physics (the one he did bad on), and he said he would not only retake Physics but also the 770 on SAT II Chem.

I told him that it would just be a waste of his time and he could be doing something else. However, he disagrees with me, so I decided to ask for more opinions here.

Basically, his argument is that since he's going to use a Saturday to take Physics, why not also take the SAT II Chem because its just going to be 1 more hour. And he is pretty sure he can do better on it (he made the USNCO and from my experiences is amazing at chem). However, I warned him that most colleges look at the 770 pretty much the same as an 800 (both in the same range), and if he does worse, it will look really bad for colleges that don't use score choice. I can see his argument and its obviously his decision, but he said that he wanted the recommendation of others.

So what do you guys think?

The chem subject test has a weird format, so if your friend didn’t study for it, it shouldn’t be that difficult to do better with a quick glance at a review book. The chem 770 score may damage his “chemistry-god” image.

He’s right. There’s no reason for him not to retake it. And above poster is also right. If he wants to show that he’s really really good at Chem in particular, he’ll need that 800.

IMO, the difference between a 770 and a 790 is marginal. The difference between a 770 and an 800 is significant. 770 they know what you got within a question or two. 800 you could have gotten them all right or gotten 6 wrong. But they don’t know.
