1.) Do you hold any consideration for those around you when you smoke in public places(sidewalks, campus walkways, bathrooms) or are you just selfish by nature? Has it ever occurred to you that not everybody feels like polluting their lungs on the way to class? Do you even consider the health effects it may cause you, much less to those around you? I really would like to know....

Secondhand smoke is more dangerous than firsthand, smokers made the right choice. Stop complaining, its not polluting your lungs anyways, and no smokers don't care.

People generally care more about their own happiness than the well-being of others when one is substitutable for the other... shocking insight, I know.

I don't smoke and have never felt the desire to do it, but I have to take the opposing side here.

I can't say I enjoy the smell of smoke either, but I don't think I'm going to get lung cancer from inhaling a little bit of secondhand smoke.

What annoys me is the people who complain about smokers, and it seems like there ALWAYS is one when you see someone smoking. It's gotten to the point where I feel like they must have some ulterior motive behind their complaints, because it isn't THAT bad.

People are allowed to smoke. Be glad they're doing it outside. Besides, how many times have you been loud with your friends or done something else to annoy people in a public place? We all have, so this is just your turn to be the one annoyed.

I don't think that I'm going to get cancer from walking behind someone who's smoking, but that doesn't make it any less antisocial. I hate it when people smoke in public. It sould be hidden away like other dirty habits :)

50,000 deaths from secondhand smoke? How do you even show something like secondhand smoke causes a death?

All it is is an annoyance. To tell you the truth, I'll take thirty seconds of walking behind a smoker over five minutes on a bus with noisy little kids any day.

Ok, how are you going to keep calling analogies stupid. His "claim" that car exhaust kills people is just as plausible as secondhand smoke doing it at this point...

Labeling it as simply "an annoyance" is naive at best.

The analogy was fruitless, b/c comparing smoking w/ automobile exhaust calls into question the functionality and need of cigarettes vs. automobiles...

I think the secondhand smoke sicknesses you keep alluding to affect people who are constantly around smokers, e.g. spouses and children of people who smoke in their house.

Also, notice how your article uses words like "linked" and "associated." If you've ever taken statistics you'll know that correlation doesn't imply causation. Basically, just because they're linked doesn't mean one caused the other.

First of all, who DOESN'T experience "Environmental Tobacco Smoke"? You can make any association you'd like with it when it's everywhere. Linked with MIDDLE EAR INFECTIONS?! Ha. I think I might have made an observation, too. My uncle smokes and my aunt just had a baby a little while ago. SECONDHAND SMOKE CAN CAUSE PREGNANCY!!!!

As much as I really abhor smoking, I think this kind of outright hostility to smokers is really uncalled for. They're people too, even if they've made a poor decision to take up a habit like smoking.

If think you're going to spontaneously die of lung cancer from walking behind a person who is smoking, then there's nothing stopping you from crossing the street, lagging behind a few steps, or speeding up to get past the smoker in question. I think a smoker is being considerate enough to take it outside in the open air where the smoke is dispersed.

Seriously, while second hand smoke does cause illness, the amount that you're exposed to in 20 seconds behind a smoker is really minuscule.

i am against smoking, because it is bad for your health.
however, this thread should be deleted. it was made with obvious malicious intent. you are heavily biased to one side of the issue and not open to opposing viewpoints. therefore, this thread holds no other purpose than to **** people off.
people can smoke if they want to, but we are doing a decent job of phasing it out. you, on the other hand, are not helping the issue. you are only pushing people farther to the opposite view as your own.

by the way: **** ***** **** **** ********* *********** ****.

I am selfish by nature. It has occurred to me that some people believe a little bit of secondhand smoke can be harmful. It has also occurred to me that those people are stupid.

haha how can you try to prevent someone from smoking OUTSIDE?!
the air is for all of us!

i'm not a smoker myself, but i don't view smokers as purely evil like many people do. if i don't like it, i walk elsewhere--that's freedom for you.

I'm not really a smoker but if you asked me that while I was smoking, my response would be: Dude, I don't give a crap about my life, why the h.e.l.l would you think that I give a s.h.i.t about yours? That sounds harsh but you should really mind your own business. Don't bother smokers...
