Knowing that to be a doctor is a 12-year or more commitment, how did you guys figure out that you are willing to take the chance and be a doctor? How did you know that being a doctor is your calling? What makes you decide that this is what you want? Are you all that brave to be committed to such long years? Please explain why and how you all figured out that you want this? Thank you.

I want to be a doctor b/c I want to be one. I’ve tried exploring countless times, and theres simply no other profession fits me quite as well.

Yes, I am also interested in OP’s question.

Other than the extra time, there are certainly other factors such as debt and relationships to consider. If I may, I would like to add that the alternative could be a 2-4 years of advanced degree in engineering, business, law, etc. Especially, if you have the people skills, your future could be just as bright. You might become an engineering manager/director if you would like to pursue engineering. You might become a CFO or a VP in a financial/private company if you are interested in business. You might become a lawyer/judge, working for a law firm/IRS/SEC/federal government if you enjoy speaking in front of people. Please do not underestimate the significance of these professionals. They may not be able to save lives in the surgery room. But, they certainly would be able to save jobs, save the economy, and serve justice with the good prospect of handsome income. If you are very talented, your choices are far and beyond the ones mentioned above. Why would you decide to spend such a crucial period of your life in medical school/residency to pursue the medical career?

I hate business, and I hate law. I love medicine. I could never see myself as anything but a doctor. My sister wants to be a buyer and hates medicine. Others feel differently; it’s about the individual.
