Question of the day!

hey guys! In the question of the day of yesterday I got this sentence below incorrectly.

(Rita Dove, African American writer and teacher, as) poet laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995.

(A) Rita Dove, African American writer and teacher, as
(B) Rita Dove was an African American writer and teacher as
(C) African American writer and teacher Rita Dove was
(D) African American writer and teacher, Rita Dove was
(E) An African American writer and teacher, it was Rita Dove

I know that the original sentence is a fragment and I thought that the answer should be either C or D, but I don't really get why it is C not D. isn't Rita Dove in this sentence an appositive and it has to be preceded and followed by commas. in sentence C the sentence seems like it lacks punctuation. why is D incorrect??

I made the same mistake. There is no need for the comma in D. If it started with “An African American…” then a comma would be necessary.

thanks. this type of questions always confuses me. =S
