question on CMC supplement essay

On the CMC supplement, it says "Identify and discuss a person, fictional or nonfictional, who has helped shape culture and thought. You may select someone from any field: literature, the arts, science, politics, history, athletics, business, education, etc."

I just need a couple clarifications (anyone's opinion is welcome).

When it is talking about someone who has shaped culture and thought, does it have to be OUR culture and thought? Can it be the culture and thought of someone that is in a fictional book? i.e. a random character in a book has shaped the book's characters culture/thought...

Also, Do you think it would be too weird/not desirable if I chose a character from an obscure science fiction book? I was thinking of writing how that specific character affected himself and everyone else in his world through his quest for the eradication of evil and for "world peace."

in my opinion (USUAL DISCLAIMER: im no expert), i think it was intentionally left somewhat ambiguous so that they could see where you went with it and judge it based on more than just how well you write it... which 95% of people who apply are going to write it well.

so go for it.
