What are Freshman Seminars, how are they different from normal classes, and how do I sign up for them? I read somewhere that they're useful in finishing some general education courses so I was wondering what is the advantage of taking them over a regular class. Are they easier? If so, do they carry the same weight as a regular class on GPA and applications to med. school? Thanks so much for the help!

Take one!!! The First Year Seminars are small classes (around 20 students) taught by a professor on a subject matter that is their passion. Take a look at the catalog…find professors that have won teaching awards…a good sign of a great teacher. It’s also a great place to form a relationship with other students who may have the same interests as you as well as a professor who shares your passion on the subject. If there is a particular seminar that you really want to take and you can’t get into it (only so many seats open up at each CTOPS session), then email the professor and let them know how much you want to take the class. They have the ability to get you into the class even if it says it’s full.

They carry the same weight as other classes, not necessarily easier, but probably a lot more interesting.

Thanks!! Do you know where I can find the catalog?

Go to unc.edu and do a search for “first year seminars” and you’ll find what you need.

Thanks MaterMia!! I found it!
