Hi, I have been studied in China and will be finished high school here. However, recently I got my green card and my status could be changed into U.S. citizenship. As for admission, will I be considered as an international student or a domestic student? In which case can I increase my chance of being admitted? If I apply as a domestic student, will I be disadvantaged since I have never studied in U.S? And I do not need Financial Aid.
Thanks!

if you have green card, you apply as a domestic student. The only disadvantage you might have is that if you are not officially a resident of any particular state because you have been residing outside the US, you will not have a particular state public university you can apply to and pay in-state tuition rates.

There are lots of students like you, so don’t worry about this. The colleges and universities will know what to do with your Chinese school records. When you apply, ask each of the places that you apply to what they want you to do. Some will want you to have your records evaluated by an organization like [World Education Services - International Education Intelligence](http://www.wes.org) Others will evaluate your records themselves.

Congratulations on the green card!

Thank you. Will the green card increase or decrease my chance to be admitted? Most of colleges I apply is private schools and I am not going to apply for financial aid.

Your green card does not increase/decrease your chances in the domestic pool. However, it rescues you from the incredibly competitive international pool – which is good.

I have heard that some private colleges prefer to admit international students cause they can afford full-tuition. Is that true?

Yes it’s true. But being a full pay green card holder from China is just as good. There is no need to hide your green card status.

Which schools are you considering?

I was deferred by Duke and Swarthmore College. Also considering Uchicago, Upenn and MIT. I was just wondering whether my chance will be increased if I changed my status.

If you’ve not informed them of your green card, I advise you to do so IMMEDIATELY. You cannot imagine the competitiveness of the international pool. By declaring your Green card, you boost your chances immensely.

Schools like Duke, Swarthmore, UChicago and MIT are DEFINITELY not the type of school that cares if you’re a full-pay international. Being in the international pool is a HUGE disadvantage. Go! Go! Contact them NOW

The schools that would confer advantage to a full pay international are the types of schools that get few good international applicants. your list has none of those.

Thanks so much for your suggestion! I will contact those schools immediately.
