While researching things that hedge funds like in applicants, I saw that they like applicants to have "winning" personal portfolios.

As a college student, I'll have to do this using an online broker.

Which one would you guys recommend the most?

I use Charles Schwab. They discounted my transactions to $6 because I trade frequently and have a daytrading account with them. I also like that they have a no non-sense approach to margin trading and short selling - and I utilize both of these practices weekly. Additionally, they offer a checking account with no ATM surcharge fees and it links to your brokerage account. I have used TD Ameritrade and signed up for E Trade to test it, and Schwab is the best in my book.

Do you trade with large amounts of money?

I’m concerned that since I won’t be using large amounts of money I’ll end up losing more than I earn due to commissions.

@Drailing - Not really large amounts of money, but enough to meet the minimum requirements to daytrade. If you don’t trade often, or don’t have a large amount, the $9 trades can be a little steep.
