I apologize if this has been asked already, but I haven't found any information.

Today I received an invitations to Sigma Alpha Pi honor society. I've never heard of this organization and didn't know my college had a chapter. When I got to the second paragraph I thought the whole thing was bogus. They were offering all kinds of fancy things that came along with membership like scholarships and letters of recommendation. They also said the organization was very "selective" and I was selected based on gpa. It really sounded ridiculous when I read that in order to even attend an information meeting you needed to activate a membership code and pay $85. Red flags all around. I already belong to an honor society and it involved a lot more for membership than just paying a fee.

I'm also contacting my school tomorrow to find out information. Have you heard of this organization? I'm trying to see if this is something worthwhile and respected, or if it's some sort of ripoff. I won't be paying any money until I have more information, but my gut is telling me to stay far away.

My rule of thumb is, if you have to question whether or not it’s a scam, it’s a scam. I got something similar in the mail too, but for the National Society of High School Scholars. Sounds like an enticing title, but what kind of honor requires you to pay $60 to receive.

Stay very far away. I’m glad you became skeptical, because many students fall into that trap wanting to add another line to their resume. Competitive high schoolers are easy prey, but I’m glad you didn’t become one of them.

Thanks. I’m actually going to be a senior in college in August, so it wouldn’t be worth my while anyway. I’ve got too much on my plate already. I did a quick fb post to see if any college friends had heard of such a thing. My one friend was a member and has since graduated. She said she attended a few meetings per semester and did learn some networking skills. All in all though she said while it’s not totally bogus, she gets to put it on her resume and got a letter of rec, but it wasn’t worth $85.

Just to let newer posters know about the game: as soon as somebody with no prior posts comes on this thread to tell us how great this honor society is, everybody take a drink.
