To those of you who have applied to M.I.T before (others can answer as well), do you believe that it's necessary/important to write how much you want to attend M.I.T?

I'd write about whatever you want, but I would submit an optional essay. My child, now a freshman, did not write any sort of "Why MIT" essay.

It's certainly not necessary to write an essay about how much you want to attend MIT, and in my opinion it's only useful to do so if you can write a really great essay about why you want to attend MIT.

Most students who are admitted to MIT choose to attend, so I don't think MIT is overly concerned with whether a student will attend after being admitted. Demonstrated interest is not a very important factor for MIT admission.

I agree with Mollie, and I'm just chiming in as another person here saying that I didn't write my optional essay on why I chose MIT over another school =P

Thanks guys for the replies! I wanted to save my optional essay for something important.
