Question to all ex/current Physics kids: Hovercraft

Note to Mod Happies: I’m not asking anyone to do my hovercraft;)

Wondering, how many of y’all are doing this? I asked an AP kid and he’s not doing it… or perhaps his will be later in the year (though the year is almost over).

My teacher gave us a print out… of basically this
http://groups.physics.umn.edu/pforce/hovercraft.html
Which seems to be widely circulated around the net, therefore, widely circulated across physics classrooms?

What should be the cost of all of this? My teacher said… minimal. I don’t believe him! I define minimal as ~$20. I’m thinking this could be around $50-100 (across our group of 3-4 though) since trial and error, and me thinking that we’ll make Home Depot cut the plywood into a circle rather than using a giant protractor to cut it ourselves, therefore, incurring service costs.

Actually, “minimal” might not be too far off, since the only really expensive thing is the wood… and I’m not even sure if that’s expensive… But still, trial and error, board no work, board explode, buy another board.

And…once we get all the supplies, guess the manhour to do all of this? Unlike our previous egg project, where we had to think (or some people just stuffed them in big bags of crap), this one is just a follow the direction thing… but still, lengthy directions.

Have you/are you going to do this?

Total cost?

Hours (we’re given about a month to do this, but junior year, busy, blah)

Morning to all, I'm going to Home Depot to get some supplies, would appreciate some responses:)

Blah, went to Home Depot and Lowes, got 2 4x4 0.5 inch plywood boards for $10. Except they wouldn't cut a circle for me, now I gotta go around town looking for woodshop, warehouses, etc. Come on, I'm not the only one doing this?

I feel alone..

My friend bought a fully functional hovercraft off of ebay. That thing is so much fun to ride around in. I ride around in his backyard on it. I have no idea why, but it makes me laugh really hard whenever I'm on it. I probably look like such a dumbass on that thing. lol

Yes, I looked on ebay for some premade ones;) but couldn't find any that remotely looked like what we're supposed to (not boats).
So anyone that did the project?

Is it that important that it be a circle? Why not let it be the square it is?

If that doesn't work, get yourself a chainsaw (or borrow one) and try your best.

I read that it doesn't necessarily have to be a circle, but it's a lot safer to have a spinning circle then a spinning square.. I might have to resort to an evil square if I can't cut it in a month but I doubt that..

Or maybe I'll make an octagon or something..

Boo, it's been a week, mom's boyfriend supposedly went around town and found no circle cutter. Bah..

Wow, that sounds awesome. I want one of those :D

Our AP physics class last year did one lab for the entire year...and it wasn't really graded, and it was after the AP exam. So no hovercrafts for us.

So what I did to cut the circle was.. Draw the circle by using a stick, marking a spot on the stick, keep pencil on mark, move around in a circle. Then, for many painful hours, me and "dad" used screwdrives, hammered them around the circumference so that it could be weakened enough for tearing/saw. Blah blah, first trial didn't work, stupid not yet father in law said "teacher says it's supposed to work but he's just saying that". Silly SAT sub 1000 scorer. So, I did on my own, mask taping the thing. Just a bit of mask tape on a portion helped a good bit. Then I walked around the neighborhood and asked around and found a staple gun! Less air leakage now. Voila, it works good. If only I went around for a hand saw.. but who would have those.

Awesome! I win woo

I made this video so that I could ask my teacher if it's making progress (it's spring break, this project is due April ~19th).
