Question: UVa vs. UMich vs. UCLA

GoBlue81,

I never said Michigan is not well known and well respected among my Asian colleagues, business partners, friends and relatives. They know that Michigan is a great and elite university, but it is UCLA that edges out Michigan by a narrow margin in their perception and opinion.

I worked for a major financial institution on the West Coast and in Korea and Japan for over 10 years. From my personal experience with people in the Far East Asia, I can assure that UCLA is perceived as more popular and prestigious university in academic circles and among employers in the geographical area. I was even shocked by the fact that Korean and Japanese high school students and teachers in general are well aware that UCLA is significantly more selective than Michigan. It was also a pleasant surprise that 15 and 43 UCLA stores are currently open in Korea and China, respectively.

“Michigan has more than a century of involvement in China, almost as old as Yale’s (i.e., UCLA can’t compare)”

In consideration of the fact that Michigan, established in 1817, has a longer school history than UCLA, established in 1919, your statement is understated and I can’t argue. In consideration of the Michigan’s much longer school history to UCLA, UCLA’s 3 spot higher ranking in the USNWR rankings should upset many Michigan alums.

From my observations and conversation with business professionals in the Far East Asia, UCLA Anderson School of Management is considered on par with the Ross School of Business or slightly more prestigious.

“In consideration of the Michigan’s much longer school history to UCLA, UCLA’s 3 spot higher ranking in the USNWR rankings should upset many Michigan alums.”

Congrats! You just officially became a ■■■■■!

rjkofnovi,

Dude, get real. ^^

Hattorihanzo, it is customary to show some form of respect and decorum when a guest in one’s forum. This is a Michigan forum, and as such, you should adhere to certain guidelines. Your opinion is welcome, but you need to tone it down.

Nobody is going to win a debate on prestige since such a subject is invariably subjective. How we discuss this subject, on the other hand, should meet certain criteria. On the UCLA forum, you will notice that Michigan students and alums are mindful of their guest status and as such, behave respectfully. On the Michigan forum, we expect nothing less.

Might be kind of off topic but just to add: Yes, UCLA may be more respected among Asians, but I don’t think this is important in defining the actual quality of the school. These people tend to think that a more ‘well-heard’ university is more prestigious and respected. For example, most of the people would think that NYU and Boston University are more prestigious than, maybe, Notre Dame or even Swarthmore. Universities that are discussed and heard more often, either because a lot of their students/alumni are present or the name of the school includes a name of a well known city (might sound stupid, but is true), are automatically perceived as being ‘better universities’.

^^^California has a HUGE Asian population. Michigan does not. It’s as simple as that.

I know that as an Asian that Michigan and UCLA are both prestigious schools. However, Biology/Medicine at Michigan in countries such as India, Pakistan, etc. is more valued.

Azarap,

“I know that as an Asian that Michigan and UCLA are both prestigious schools. However, Biology/Medicine at Michigan in countries such as India, Pakistan, etc. is more valued.”

I know that Michigan (#15) is higher than UCLA (#23) in the USNWR’s biological sciences programs ranking. However, do you have a data to support your claims that medicine at Michigan is more valued in countries such and India, Pakistan, etc.?

According to the USNWR, UCLA Medical Center is ranked best in the West, as well as one of the top 3 hospitals in the United States along with Johns Hopkins Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

I am not convinced how medicine at Michigan is more valued.

I’m about to throw my laptop through a wall reading all this ridiculous rankings bickering. Throughout this thread I’ve seen comparisons such as 10 vs. 12, 11 vs. 11, 13 vs. 14, 13 vs. 16, 7 vs. 9, etc. Oh yea? Well my d*** is 6.8 inches long while yours is only 6.7.

I agree giants. In the long run, who the heck cares if you graduated from UCLA, UVA, or Michigan.

Hattorihanzo, I understand that you love UCLA and feel that its better than Michigan. But like Alexandre said, you are a guest on our forums. As one, you should show some courtesy and stop talking down to Michigan. Michigan students/alumni are a very proud group of people and they will argue with you until the chickens come mooing home.

Everyone should just let this thread die. The OP made a decision already.

giants, I’m impressed 8^) … but you are right of course. Could we close out this thread please?
