question

If one got into their college/university/conservatory of choice, registered, and was set to go, but then was cast in a Broadway show or a show abroad- something of that sort. Could this person return to that school in the second semester, or the next year, without having to re- audition? Or if this person completed their freshman year, and then this happened in their sophmore year- could they return and go from where they left off?

Sorry if this was very confusing, but any answers would be wonderful?

well, I don't know about musical theatre colleges but i know that with other colleges if you do all that, and then for some reason don't get housing or decide to take a year off, you tell them you aren't going and then reaply the next year. But, because you got in the last year, most of the time they reaccept you.

i don't know if this is true for MT programs and I would becareful in this sort of situation.

I don't know about this happening prior to attending at all - I know people to whom such casting has happened, but they have all chosen to go to school instead of working - but I know several people to whom this has happened during their sophomore year and above. In those cases, it's very dependent on the school and the student's work to date there. Sophomore year is still a fundamentals year for many curricula - UM, for example - so some schools are much more hesitant to have students leave then than they would be to have them leave later in the progran. But if a school is pleased with a student's work, leaves of absence - even hesitant ones (on the part of the school) - are usually workable. I can think of 3 examples of people I know in the last 4 years (and I'm sure there are countless other example - these are just ones I personally know):

A guy who attended UM got a big regional Equity gig 2nd semester his sophomore year and negotiated a leave of absence. He did that show and a big Equity stock lead that summer, then returned to UM in the fall as a junior - but after that semester decided he wanted to take another leave for professional and personal reasons. A major reason was that his agents (gotten through his 1st Equity gig) wanted to send him in for things all the time, and it was hard to do this being so far away from NYC. He discussed this second leave with UM faculty and they were really supportive, so he did it, and 2 weeks after moving to NYC he was cast in a major B-way show. He been working consistently in major gigs ever since, but he is still in close touch with the UM faculty and is always contemplating if/when he will go back.

A girl who went to Tisch and Adler was cast as the lead in a B-way show during the early fall of her sophomore year. Tisch gave her a hard time about a leave but she succeeded in getting one. She rehearsed and opened the show and, for personal and professional reasons, has not yet gone back to school - but she also may still do so.

There is a UM student who took a leave his junior year to do a national tour and will be returning this coming year.

Hope this helps! :)

BRBway, a couple of more instances of anecdotal stories. :)

Soozievt has mentioned a friend of her D here on the forum, and I've had the pleasure of meeting him, who is in the current national tour of Rent. He was a senior at Brown when he was cast and left before his final semester to tour. His plan is to return next spring. Two girls in that tour also left college when cast. One at Tisch CAP21 after first semester of junior year. Tisch granted her a leave, with no trouble (her casting went from audition to start of rehearsals in 3 days!), and she has two years to return without anything further. If she chooses to extend that, it IS possible to do so. The other girl was at West Chester U in her senior year and was actually granted her degree early when she was cast in the show.

If a student is cast prior to starting freshman year, at Tisch (the only one I can speak to with any certainty) they would have to apply for a deferral just like any other NYU student who wishes to take a gap year. Deferrals are good for a one year period only, and you would only be able to start at Tisch in the fall. There are no spring entries for freshmen.
