So for the past few years I've been set on going to medical school, but I'm starting to think that it may not be for me. I'm majoring in Neuroscience/Pre-med and have a 3.94 GPA. I have 2 more years of undergrad left and I should take the MCAT soon. I've been looking into pharmacy school and it seems interesting. I don't know what my career options are with my major and I don't want to sell myself short. I do know though that I don't want to miss out on life and lose myself on my quest to save others.

I am planning on majoring in neuroscience/premed also. Just remember that with your hard work, GPA, and MCATS you will get in if you want. Don’t stress, take a walk and contemplate this. Imagine your future, where you want to be. Have you shadowed any doctors? Is that the life you want? And you are right- do what YOU want to do for the rest of your life. Some people are meant to save others, some are meant to work with drugs.

I am interested in neurosurgery. Here are some careers in neuroscience, some including the medical track.

Neuroanatomist
Neurobiologist
Neurochemist
Neurological Surgeon
Neurologist a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system
Neuropathologist who studies diseases of the nervous system

-----You might like this—Neuropharmacologist studies the action of drugs on the nervous system and/or behavior

Neuropsychologist studies brain-behavior relationships (especially cognitive functions) in humans

Neurophysiologist
Physiological Psychologist
(Psychobiologist or Biological Psychologist)
Psychiatrist

Swallow
Fire fighters, police, marines all also save lives. That is not why you should go into medicine.

I would suggest seeing if the BSA have a medical explorer post where you are at. That is a great way to look into various aspects of medicine. Shadowing a doc may or may not help you. If you follow a GP who is just in the office all day, you may find that terribly boring.

Medicine is fun and should be fun.

Keep doing what you are doing. You do NOT have to go into medicine. More importantly, you do NOT have to decide now. Learn more about the fields that are open to you. Talk to some of your current and past professors. If there is an academic medical center nearby try to get to see what goes on there. There are lots of research options if you do not want to do clinical medicine. You can go to these with an MD or PhD.

If you go into medicine, you do NOT have to go directly from college. If you are still undecided a year from now, don’t apply. Go work somewhere for a while and figure out what you want to do.
