Hi, I just finnished up my freshman year at a college in new england area.I am an english communications major (or atleast i hope to be) but one thing is stopping me in my way. My professor. I thought i was good at writing. First semester i tooka college level english class and got an A which is really good. I also got A's in high school english and i thought my writing was pretty so so i said why not put it to good use declare english communcations major.so i did. so i have to take this rhetoric class as a prerequisite and i have to get a C or better to be in this major. so im like alright piece of cake. not really. it seems to me my professor doesnt like either what i write about, my topics, the way i write or something bc i keep getting 7.5 out of 10 on my esssays. i went to ask him so i could improve, and this is a class not with a 100 kids in it its like 15 so its small and he knows who i am. and he goes u have a hard time communicating ur ideas.so im like what really. so now im ****ed bc im like what the hell i got all A'swhats wrong with my writing why didnt someone pick up on this "concept" sooner!!! so i show my next essay to the tudor for the class and my aunt whose and english professor....they all loved it and said it was good....i have not gotten my grade for it yet but, ifi get a C on it, is it really my writing that is terrible or is it that he doesnt like me?what are everyone's thoughts? any similar stories??thanks

Well, I usually have this same inferiority problem. But you have to remember, professors are the highest of critics. Does he have a Ph.D, a Master’s, or a B.A? That’s also a good indication of whether you should listen to the criticism he is giving you. Do your parents and aunt have a degree in writing? Do you think you should listen to them?

Writing well is not about what the writer is writing for himself, it is about whether the reader is liking what you write. Communication is the sole responsibility of writing, and if you feel as if your writing is not communicating well with this, er, professor, or anyone who does not like your writing for good reasons, this is a good indication that you need to work on it to improve. Writing is fugging hard work! No one should misunderstand that. And it is supposed to be.

Like, for instance, what I just wrote… Did you understand it? Was it clear enough? Did it captivate you in suspense?

You just have to keep the reader in high regards whenever you are writing, but do not give up. Writing is something anyone can do. Just keep practicing. It’s not like math, where there is a right or wrong answer. Creativity comes with active thinking and you sound pretty active in your thinking so you should do fine.

I hope I will too. prays

Post a small sample of your writing here, so I can see where your professor might be coming from.

Writers usually have particular issues with their writing. It might be something I could spot.

i know my professor has a phd and i do listen to what he has to say, i do that with all my professors. but here is a sample of my writing…

is was the last paper i did that my aunt looked at and she has her phd too…
i know writing is subjective and so is grading but im just curious if this is what i wanna go into for my major am i making the right or wrong choice…

The music business is a booming industry and has been for quite some time. Musicians, singers, songwriters and producers work very hard each year to come up with the next big hit and the next big star. Breaking into the music business has evolved throughout time only making it even easier. Talent shows such as American Idol have changed the ideals of how to make it in the music industry. Some people say that American Idol has changed the way the music is looked at. American Idol is referred to as the boot camp of all the different types of talent shows. American Idol is a very prestigious and rigorous experience of a lifetime. Singers are truly put through the test to see if they can make it in the industry. In Paul De Man’s essay of Semiology and Rhetoric he mentions many ways in which rhetoric appears through text and media. American Idol is the soul representation and example of Paul De Man’s Semiology and Rhetoric theory of “tropes and figures.”
American Idol is a singing competition, shown on television, which sets out to seek the most talented young singers throughout the country. The first season began auditions on June 11, 2002. Singers came to auditions in many cities nationwide to audition for this wonderful opportunity granted to them. Contestants went through a series of mini competitions before making their way to Hollywood to the big stage. Thousands audition for this show and only a couple of hundred make it through. Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson are the icons of this show determining the fate of each contestant with their flavorful humor, advice, compliments, and harsh criticism. Once in Hollywood they narrow the hundreds of contestants down to the top 24. Thus making it that far they narrow it down to the top 12. Once it’s narrowed down to the top 12, those select few move onto the “big stage”. Once on the “big stage” each week is a different theme week. Within each theme week contestants have to perform songs that best match their skill, voice, and message behind the songs. Past themes have been country week, songs from the 70’s and 80’s, songs from the year you were born, and songs by mentors such as Dolly Parton and Mariah Carey. Each week a series of eliminations, through a nation wide vote, determines who stays on the show and who leaves. At the end of a 3 to 4 month show the winner is revealed to the public and granted the title and duties of “American Idol”. Past winners/icon figures have been, in order of their season, Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks
Paul De Man, a literary philosopher defines what it is like to create ones own sense of formality. “We speak as if, with the problems of literary form resolved once and forever, and with the techniques of structural analysis reinstated to near-perfection, we could now move “beyond formalism” towards the questions that really interest us and reap, at last, that prepared us for the decisive step” (Paul De Man 365). In this quote the explanation of creating things within interest that matter to oneself or other people and showing the importance of writing based on your ideas not worrying about form and content.
