Questions about Fit

My daughter will probably join the BC Class of 2019, but she’s been a little reluctant to make that final commitment because she concerned about fitting in socially. It may sound superficial and I hate to offend all the whale lovers out there, but D2 basically hates Vineyard Vines and preppy clothes in general (nor could she afford them). She’s also not a drinker and she’s concerned about having good friends and good times without too much pressure to get drunk. She was admitted to CSOM (which is awesome!), but with a 65/35 male/female ratio, do the women in the program have trouble being taken seriously and having their voices heard? (Though I expect being female may actually help with some opportunities.) Lastly, we’ve heard lots of vague comments about how bad BC housing is, so we’re pretty much prepared for the worse. Other schools she’s looking at have very robust residence life communities/activities, and big, apartment style housing. Does anyone have any positive feedback about BC Res Life?

Preppy comes up a lot for many colleges. You might find these links interesting:

As for drinking/party schools, BC has a long way to go to top this list. For example:

Our experiences with the dorm life has been very good. Mine have lived on upper first year and then on lower for the remaining years and very happy at that. Never at Newton, though. Where did you hear that the housing at BC is bad? I find that vague comments can be misleading as too often such comments are not from direct experiences.

I think I’ve let niche.com influence my opinions way too much.

BC housing is pretty good. Yeah, some colleges are known for having ‘dorms like palaces’, but gotta say BC’s are nice. The only hassle is for those students who don’t have four years of guaranteed on-campus housing. Going off campus Junior year can be a PIA, at least for those of us far away, but its a great learning experience and many kids love it.

Frosh housing is typical dorm, but nice. Upper class housing can consist of suites, with a good lottery number.

you will find most, if not all, undergrad biz programs to have a large male majority. No reason to expect CSOM to be any different. OTOH, BC is an integrated Univ so your roommates could be A&S (lots more girls), Education (ditto), and/or Nursing (even more xx chromosomes.)

What other colleges are you considering?

ps. Bentley is 60% guys, according to the federal database, IPEDS.

In total, BC is 53% female, so there will be plenty of like-minded girls with which to hang.

Our son lived on the Newton campus his freshman year. The bus does get old quickly, but Newton does have many intangible benefits. Search this BC CC forum for Newton discussions and you’ll find lots of good input.

As for going off campus Junior year, everyone’s experience is different, but it was a positive one for our son and greater circle of friends. Many set up their apartments so that students doing a semester abroad in the fall could swap bedrooms with those going abroad in the spring. As a parent, it was interesting to watch them face the realities of off campus living (landlords, collecting rents, paying bills). They definitely learned things one doesn’t learn in a classroom.

Senior year, living on campus is the place to be. The Mods are like a town/city within the campus. We couldn’t believe how many other parents we met that year who shared stories with us about their son or daughter calling them up screaming with excitement when they learned they won a lottery spot to live in the Mods (our son included).

There are a few current and past students who frequent this site. Hopefully they can share some of their personal experiences

BC is an awesome school. It has a way of enabling students to grow and blossom in ways that will make you teary eyed when you watch your daughter go through it.

bluebayou: My daughter also got into Bentley w/ 1/2 tuition scholarship and some other factors that would make it about $10k less expensive than BC. She’s not really considering there though because she’d rather go to a school with more of a broad liberal arts foundation, not just business. And, Bentley doesn’t have much in the way of sports and school spirit.

She considered Loyola Maryland, where he sister went, but her aid (even with Pres. scholarship) was not very good. They’re dorms are great, but more importantly their residence life is robust and there are tons of opportunity for socializing and going on excursions.

She’s still looking at Richmond and semi-strongly considering it, but we haven’t physically visited yet.

She will almost certainly go to BC and choose substance free housing. She also got 4 years of housing, so maybe we’re worried for nothing. I told if she can’t stand the dressy/preppy fashion at BC, she could just start an “I love comfy clothes (sweatpants, jeans, tees, and sweatshirts, OH MY!) club.”

^^technically, ALL Frosh housing is sub-free.

And yes, much to the chagrin of the hard partiers, the RA’s do give out demerits…
