Questions about Fordham

Hey guys i was recently admitted to the Gabelli @LC at Fordham as a finance/econ major. I got nearly a full ride so i am strongly considering going to Fordham but i have a few questions!

-How bad is the grade deflation and how well does the average student do?
-How is the social life and will it be challenging to make friends as a commuter?
-Is there a “community” feel since the campus is so small?
-What’s the diversity like?
-Why did you choose Fordham?

I have more questions but this is all i have for now THANKS!!!

Why did YOU choose Fordham? Why Gabelli? Why LC? What are you looking for in a college experience? Campus life?

No, its not challenging to make friends at Fordham for anyone. Lots of commuters at LC, btw. Fordham is doing its level best to be diverse in every measure of that word: ethnic, religious, geographic, socioeconomic. Officially Fordham is 25% or so (give or take) “diverse.” Fordham is about 60% Catholic, though not all catholics are practicing catholics, and LC is less catholic than RH.

Fordham’s grade deflation is relative to how much grade inflation you had in high school. If you had a lot of grade inflation, look out! If you had to work hard for your grades and were challenged in high school, and took rigorous courses and it wasnt mickey mouse or hand holding, you will be fine…but yes, college is ramping up quite a bit, Fordham is an academic school where earning an A means you EARNED an A. Depends on your motivation and work ethic and focus. Slackers dont do well at Fordham. But hard work pays off very well…with good grades and good recommendations for internships.

Top students get the best internships. Its that simple.

I’m a residential student at Fordham RH so I can’t answer all of your questions. There are LC people who come to this board so hopefully they will chime in. Here is what I can tell you…

  • From what I found at RH some commuter students come for class and leave right after class and others make an concerted effort to get involved on campus and have much fuller experiences. I suggest your find some clubs, activities etc. you are interested in when you get to campus and get involved right away.
  • I understand that Fordham has a reputation for grade deflation but I have found the grading to be quite fair. If you work hard and diligently you should do fine. The professors typically get to know you and are also available for help which is a great quality of Fordham.
  • For me Fordham RH had the perfect combination of a a great education, good merit aid and a beautiful traditional campus being close to NYC.

Again, hopefully some LC students/parents will respond as well. Congrats on your acceptance and scholarship.

-I would say the average student does fine, B to A-. Grade deflation isn’t that big a deal, but it various wild by department.

  • Very easy to make friends as commuters at LC because almost half the students commute. There’s a special club for commuters that has activities and events. You won’t feel left out, but it completely depends on you.
  • Kinda… there’s clubs and people join them and do stuff but not the same as in RH or a large college.
  • LC is very diverse for being an expensive NYC college. All races, all genders, etc.
  • Because I liked it when I visited and stayed for a few days and got free tuition. Good NYC location, internships opportunities nearby, etc.
