Questions about life at USAFA

I've always taken the toughest route as far as academics, so I might take that challenge. I guess I shouldn't look too far in the future right now, though, and just focus on getting in.

Can any of you post your HS stats? Were you all tops in everything in your high school?

My S who is a senior (in a couple weeks), is awaiting his PE tests from his ALO. Here is a question he has asked: Can you describe your "typical" school day? How about a typical weekend day? What do you do if you are sick? Does the USAF fly you home for breaks or are you responsible for your own transportation (we got 2 diff answers to that question)?

I love this thread and thank you all for your candor.

If usafa is paying for travel home - please hook me up with the travel office!

Actually, they paid to get D to AFA in June - they don't pay again unless they decide to send her someplace. We pay if we want the pleasure of her company for holidays. Which, incidentally, we do - Thanksgiving air travel is already purchased!

My HS stats:

Ranked: 14/651

Glad those days are over, so much less stress and so much more sleep now that I'm here!

Typical school day:

0640 wake-up
0700 out with the 4 digs training
0725 breakfast
0750 first period class
0750-1200 classes (I have periods 1-4 on M days and 1-2 on T days, divide the time into 4 periods for when I'm in class!)
1200-1323 lunch and military time (could be formation, parade, professional military education)
1323-1630 classes (I have 5-6 on M days, EMT class on 7th period T days)
1630-1700 chill out
1700-1800 work-out (abs class, weights, running depending on the day)
1800-1900 dinner somewhere in there
1900-2300 homework and relaxing, hanging out with friends.
2300 BED! I get 7-8 hours a night of sleep. I love it!

No typical weekend day. I'll sleep in for however long I feel, get food, go to my sponsors, all sorts of things. Think of a high school weekend.

You go to the clinic (or ER if its closed at that time) if you are sick. They treat you and will usually give you a Form 18 for limitations. Could be just meds, no training, academics only, bedrest (no classes), etc. They will take care of you as well as your friends and squad mates

You pay your travel fares. USAF or USAFA do not pay for your personal traveling, only for duty reasons (ops, etc.)

Long winded, but I can copy and paste later now. :)

now that i know the complete life history of hornet, i can sleep at night... j/k :) hornet's a good guy.

and hornet has the rest of it covered.

psh u 3rd digs get to wake up at 0640.. lucky!

haha jk i kno its way tougher than down here. im gettin tired of these damn 0530 wakeups every mornin tho ;P

Haha, Hornet and Eagle still remember how to get moving in the morning.

I usually get up around 6:15 or 6:20 to take a shower, get my uniform and room ready, then get out to help the 4 digs around 6:55.

My schedule

If you really want to double major here, that's great...but I'll still call you crazy. Almost all double majors here take VERY similar majors. Otherwise they could not fit it in without taking 25-30hour semesters (i.e. virtually impossible).

The transistion from 4dig to upperclass is interesting. Thirdclassmen get to sit CQ (which I'm doing now). Upperclasses also have tougher academic schedules and leadership duties, but we no longer have stuff like knowledge and 4dig duties. I've found it to be less annoying than 4dig responsiblities, but also more time consuming.

Thanks, Raimius and Hornetguy! That clears up some questions for my S - and his mother!

If you are involved in a Div1 Sport, how much variation is there in the schedule?

c

If you are an athlete, expect to have classes all morning, then practice all afternoon. Some IC's will get back to their squad at around 7PM.

So if any of you cadets saw people in BDUs wearing red hats, i was one of them haha. My academic advisor took us to see the noon formation today and we got to eat subway, woot.

you guys were lookin good.

As a 4 dig I still got up at 0640 too. Realistically, I could just wait till 0700 at reveille to get up now, but I enjoy working with the 4 digs in the morning.

Im sure you posted someplace before but, what squadron guy?

Hey sorry to change the subject, but i was wondering if 4digs can have visitors every weekend or do they have set times to have friends and family visit?

I am in Tiger Ten.

If your family and visitors go to Arnold hall, chapel, visitor's center, and anywhere on base (not sure that part) then you can see them every weekend if you wanted to. The weekend is your time, at least it is for sure from Saturday noon to sunday if its a silver weekend.

First Semester last year I got up at 5 every morning...

Yeah, I hated that schedule! 0700 reveille is much better than 0600!

It depends on what squadron you’re in, but for a lot of 4 degrees, you can’t just wake up a couple of minutes before reveille and throw your uniform on. In my squadron, we have to do trash duty, as well as clean the bathrooms and the SAR each morning. I go around and wake all the other 4 digs up at around 0610, and we all fall out in the hallways for details at 0625. By 0655 we all are in our respective locations for calling minutes. We call minutes from 0655 to 0715 and get quizzed on knowledge by the 3 degrees and get dropped if we screw up, but it’s really not that bad. Apparently a lot of 4 degrees don’t wake up that early, but I think it’s best to have a little extra time in the morning so that you aren’t left scrambling and end up cutting corners. Because in the morning the guys still have to shave and some of us like to shower and you have to have your room in AMI order and know your checkpoints and knowledge…

So this is my typical daily schedule here:

0500: wake up
0625: fall out for details
0655: begin calling minutes
0725: breakfast
0750 – 1143: morning classes (2nd and 4th periods on M-Days, 1st and 4th periods on T-Days)
1200: lunch
1330 – 1630: afternoon classes (5th, 6th, 7th periods on M-Days, nothing on T-Days)
1630 – 1830: squadron training time or personal time
1830 – 1910: get dinner or do whatever
1910 – 2245: ACQ (Academic Call to Quarters)
2245: TAPS

You have free periods throughout the day to work on homework or run errands, and if you use that time well, you can go to bed at TAPS. Believe me, it’s important to get your sleep here if you want to do well. Efficiency and time management is key. Also, you don’t want to be one of those kids who screws around all day and then has to stay up really late and get no sleep. Another consequence to that is that you will have no life. You want to be able to hang out with friends in the oasis or in the library or meet up with people to go work out or something and if you waste your time all day you won’t get to do that. Four degrees have very manageable schedules. I know it will get harder as the year goes on, but as long as you stay on top of things and keep a good attitude, I don’t think it will be that bad. You just have to stay focused. The upperclassmen in my squad are always telling me that I’m too happy and that they need to beat me more, but life here seriously doesn’t suck if you get all your stuff done. I actually love it here.

I'm scared to say it, but redhead here seems to have mastered my 4 degree mentality! scary, I know. :)

If you guys are work it, and able to, you could figure out details a bit better. We divided up details so that A B and C flights rotated, therefore you did them once every 3 days. We did them in the morning as well (my 4 digs now do them at night).

Developing the habits redhead is talking about is HUGE! The schedule does get more difficult each year. I have more work to do as a 3 dig in classes and in my squadron duties that the study habits I have developed are keeping me on top. However, I am much more willing and happy to do my jobs like CQ and working with my class than knowledge, minutes, and cleaning! :)

Redhead, can I ask what you mean when you say "they need to beat me more"?

first, you can't use the term "beat" redhead. its demeaning, so its now "proffessional training". lol. also, your room should be in SAMI order, not AMI ;)

our 4 digs do duties at night. me roomies last year got up earlier than i did. doin duties at night, i can get up 10 minutes before i need to be in the hall, including changing, bed into AMI (now), shaving, brushing teeth, cleaning sink, and other straightening items
