Questions about the live interview/audition of Peabody Conservatory,Johns Hopkins

I am an international music major student who has already reveived the live interview invitation(music education) from Peabody,JHU.And I also decided to show up on campus next month. My question is that will the interview be very hard? What about the possibility of getting admitted in this school?

My daughter is also going to Peabody for the audition and interview and she was wondering the same thing! So I will closely follow this thread!!

I’m going for the interview/audition, as well, as a DMA candidate in composition. As far as I know, there is an interview with the faculty panel (not sure if it’s all at once or separate), and there are a couple of entrance exams; musicology and theory. I’m applying for graduate assistantships, too, so there is a separate interview for those.

Hey great to talk to you!Is your daughter the same major(music education) as me?If you get any infor, plz let me know.I would appreciate that~~

Did you read the PDF file on the website?I noticed that the school says there will not be some tests for music education major applicants.Considering your major, yes, the theory test is necessary. And both of us applied for the master/dma degree,so the interview will be the form of one by one(the undergraduate applicants will be interviewed as groups).Wish you good luck~~~

My daughter is going for undergrad clarinet performance. I imagine interview questions vary with major and level??

My S applied and did the (undergrad) Music Ed interview last year at Peabody - he was accepted and it was high on his list. - I believe most of his Music Ed interviews were informal, conversational interviews with questions and answers going both ways – the applicant can ask questions about the program and the interviewer asks questions as well. From what my S told me (though he was speaking more globally about all of his Music Ed interviews vs. Peabody specifically), the Music Ed interviews were mostly about getting a sense of your personality and how you relate to people. Be prepared to talk about why you want to go into teaching, what (if any) experience you have working with young people, what your school music experience was like, teachers that have inspired you, that sort of thing.

Undergrads might want to read up on Peabody’s rather unique 21st Century Musician curriculum if you haven’t already, because it might provide good topics for conversation and questions to ask. I am not sure how it applies to grad students, though.

Hello dear!I really appreciate your information.Yes,I believe the Music Ed interview will be more relaxing than other majors’.Did your S apply for the scholarship that time?Is that more possible I get admitted if I give up this?
Thank you~

To NYSaxmom,
Oh I think the clarinet audition is what your daughter will participate in and I am not sure if there will be another interview for her.Wish her have a good luck!

@HazelThorne48 it may be different at the grad level in terms of scholarships but for undergrads I believe all applicants are considered for merit awards and my son was offered one.

I think you can relax and try to enjoy the interview. Peabody is known for both excellence and a supportive environment, a nice combination. At least that was true some years ago. Classicalsaxmom’s post #6 gives great details- and also suggests that you have questions ready to ask, wise advice. Enjoy it if you can!

Here is the pamphlet for the curriculum mentioned in post #6: http://peabody.jhu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Curriculum-Flyer-2017.pdf

@classicalsaxmom thank you for that! And I would love to know which school your S chose eventually⋯?

@compmom thank you for the links! And I wish myself could be well prepared before the live interview.

Seconded… @compmom thank you
And @HazelThorne48 she was informed there will be an interview!!! And of course no other performance schools she has applied to have asked for that!!!

@HazelThorne48 my son chose Eastman. Good luck with your auditions and interviews! Same to @NYsaxmom’s daughter and everyone else!

Wow!!! Congrats!! What a relief for you all.
