questions about the rc (residential college)

Hi was admitted to lsa but i put on my app that i was interested in the rc and i was wondering if someone could answer some questions about it:

What are the students like in the rc? Is it mostly people who are very into drama or in touch with nature?

If i’m in the rc, can i join a sorority in addition to it?

If i’m in the rc, will it isolate me from the rest of the university?

I’m interested in continuing Italian, but i saw that the rc does not offer that as a language but it has a language requirement. Can i fulfill this requirement outside of the rc and in the regular lsa?

It would really help me out a lot if anyone could answer these questions and/or provide me with insights on why i should be in the rc or not be in it. Thanks

I would PM frecklybeckly. She's in RC and taking Italian.

I would like to know these answers too. Shamefully I checked yes to the RC question without really knowing anything about it. Can anyone give me like the most basic definition of what it is and what the other options are?

The RC has extra requirements that the rest of the uni does not have but it is a GREAT way to make the huge university smaller. The classes have 10-15 kids and so you get a better education just simply based on 1 on 1 attention. The RC is much less sports oriented than the rest of the school and therefore much less mainstream. You are only required to live in the RC dorms for two years I believe and it would therefore not isolate you as long as you branch yourself out. Joining a sorority would definetely be one way to do that. I do not think that one would affect the other. Though, the RC is less mainstream so it might be looked down upon by more people in the RC than outside of it. That is just an assumption though. Anyway, I am not in the RC nor am I a student at U of Mich. I just visited and spent a bunch of time there. If I had not gotten into Tufts, I would be going to U of Mich RC.

Basically it's really liberal and small and the students are often interested in artsy/language/humanities stuff. If you want a smaller university and that's where your academic interests lie and you are considerably more liberal than the average person, I'd give it some consideration. I didn't really fit that profile so I'm fine with not being in it.

i'm gonna challenge the liberal part of the description. There's a strong vocal minority of conservatives in the RC, so don't feel as though you might be alone if your of that persuation. For example, Carl Cohen, who is THE rc professor, actually started the MCRI campaign. So its not all commie liberals in the RC.

I also shamefully checked the box on the application w/o knowing it. Then I received the card for it and I kind of procrastinated on replying. My friend just reminded me today and well, I lost the card. I would like to decline the invitation to it so what should I do? Should I call the office?
