My bad.

^They do not disclose the names of the lab TA’s prior to start of class (normally) but if you get a good TA one quarter, it is extremely likely that they will be teaching at the same time the next quarter. TA’s differ between GChem and Ochem labs though. It might be hard to look up TA ratings because they change TA’s a lot. Just hope you get a good one and talk with friends. They might know some good lab TA’s after a quarter or two at UCI.

Okay, thank you very much!

vhatisthis: You actually have to buy your ethernet cord and either bring in or borrow a hubport (?) from the housing community. That’s a pretty fricking huge computer, but I think that you’d have enough room.
I’ve never actually partied or heard of parties in AV but I’m sure that they still do because it’s dorm-esque. A double room is when you share a room with a roommate, but I think a double suite is when you have your own bedroom and share a bathroom, but I might be wrong. AV is literally like five minutes away from the ARC but you have to take a shuttle to the main campus so really think if it’s worth the commute. Honestly, I just really recommend the dorms in any situation but if your heart is stuck on AV, do it!

What am I supposed to be expecting at SPOP? (I’m not bringing my parents) Should I look up classes before hand so I know what they’re talking about when registration comes up?

Also, this year we have the options of “dorming” off campus in AV and the Camino del Sol apartments. Where do you think would be better to live (for social reasons mostly - none of my friends are coming to UCI so I’m going completely solo).

Also, I have the option of taking Humanities 1A or Writing 39B…which do you recommend?
I know that Humanities has more units but is hell compared to writing, but signing up for classes would be harder sophomore year if I took writing (from what I’ve heard…)

@michirondelle: If you have time, can you answer my private message? Thank you! :D

michirondelle:

It’s great to see a new student starting a Q&A thread. Keep up the support :].

KTShepard: I answered it!

Soaped: Basically, expect not to sleep at SPOP. You’re going to be doing A LOT of fun activities and get to know your SPOP group very well. Try to make friends with your group because these people might be friends of yours throughout your college career, and don’t forget to get to know your staffers as well. I have quite a few friends who are staffing SPOP this summer and they’re all really great people who will make your introduction to UCI amazing.
Definitely look up your classes and plan your schedule before SPOP so that way you can come in and register before classes fill up. Make a list of classes you want to take and bring it with you to SPOP because you’ll be ahead of the game.

Honestly, I just recommend the dorms in any situation because you’ll be meeting the most people that way. You’ll have your roommates, suitemates and hallmates around and an R.A to help you out. Just try not to get a single because I know that people who get singles have a harder time socializing.

I took the HumCore series and loved it but it was a TON of work. Honestly, if you’re not good at writing or the humanities in general, do yourself a favor and just take the G.E courses themselves. It doesn’t make anything more difficult as long as you finish Writing 39C before second year.

Is it hard to get classes like bio 97 and chem 1a?

Not at all if you are a bio major. It might be hard to get the professor/time you want but there will be a class for you.

I’m undeclared right now so Im not sure theyll let me take those classes

There should be spots. If you absolutely cannot get a spot and you really want to take the classes Bio 93 is offered in the summer and Chem 1A is available in the winter as well as summer. Bio 97 (genetics) has Bio 93 and 94 as prerequisites (I remember from last year that you could ask a counselor to grant you permission to take 97 if you got a 5 on AP Biology but they recommend that you take 93 and 94 (or at least take 93 and skip 94)).

Oh, alright!

Do you recommend any classes for an undecided major?

Humanities core or writing 39b?

How can I see what textbooks I will need in the Fall 2012 quarter for each class I am enrolled in? I would rather know now rather than the first day of class.

Hi guys! I’m going to be a biosci major at UCI this upcoming fall. These are the classes I was planning on taking but I’m not sure if it’s enough:

BIO 93
CHEM 1A
WRITING 39B

Should i really take wri39b or hum core? I am not very good at writing especially analyzing literature so I figured that I would rather take an easier class and get a better grade.

Also, I took AP Calc AB and I got a 4 on the exam. BUTTTT I got a C in the class. Should I just take Math 2A then and try to get a better grade? or skip to math 2b?

What you are taking is the standard for entering Freshman in their first quarter. Starting with 12 units will show you how much you can handle. There’s no need to pile on the units at this point because you’ll have plenty of time to finish your degree within the four years. However, if you want to get Calculus over with before the harder classes come along, you could add Math 2B if you feel confident. Personally, I hated math from high school through college and to me, it was an annoyance, even with great professors. Hum. Core is way harder than Writing. Avoid. Better writers than me have gotten C+'s/B-'s in Hum. Core where as I myself have received A’s in Writing with moderate effort. Your high school grades are no longer relevant once you enter UCI. There is no need to retake Math 2A and if you’ve covered integrals in high school, 2B will be extremely easy for you.

Oceanpartier:
thanks! I thought my high school grade would transfer on to college since that is what I was told.
I think I would much rather take math 2B in the winter because I don’t want to overload myself

And should I take bio sci 2A freshman seminar?? I heard its super easy but could be a waste of time

^Bio. Sci. 2A isn’t a class really, they just discuss popular Bio. Sci. major related topics like pre-med and how to succeed at UCI. Passing or not passing is just based on attendance. Honestly, it was a waste of time and I wouldn’t do it again. When you get a chance later on, you can take either Bio Sci 3A (Health Professions) and 3B (Non-Health Professions) based on your career goals. I took 3A and found it to be pretty insightful.

I’m probably just over thinking this but I just really want to avoid any mistakes ><
I got my financial aid award and it says this

Based on the current information submitted - I am:
An undergraduate student [CORRECT]
A dependent student [CORRECT]
Living off-campus in an apartment
On time in completing my aid application [CORRECT]
Resident [???]

I am going to be renting a room from a relative who lives in Irvine. about 10 minutes away from the school. What does it mean by “resident?” I just dont want them to assume that I will be living in one of those apartments at UCI.
