Questions for a Cal Transfer?

LOL CalBearGuy! I wish I was like you with the ready made swagger:P Thanks for taking the time to make this thread.

First off congrats on getting into your dream school and finishing off the first Semester there  I hope I get to experience that as well. Go bears!

Lol besides that would you say it’s doable to double major as a transfer, or better off minoring (As you are doing)? I’m thinking if I get Into Cal I’ll double major in American Studies & Sociology as long as I can fit in all the course work in 2 years.

Also, what subjects are your minors?

How are the squirrels there? I need to know their size and color and aggressiveness.

^ LOL

@CalBearGuy: Great to see you back and providing your insight after your first semester at Cal! This is just as useful for me as a spring admit. Go Bears! Hope to cross paths with you sometime next semester. All the best!

@mytime: My inbox is now free. I am so sorry; my inbox here is/was pretty much always full :(. I hate the 50 message inbox limit. I keep a lot of old messages from various CC members that provided great advice. Anyway, feel free to PM me about anything. I know the app period is over at this point, but if you have any other questions, feel free to message me (and it’ll work this time, I promise). :D

@Billionaire: Last year it seemed that it did make people “too guaranteed” one of my roommates had a 3.5 and NO ECs and still managed to get in (he was TAP). In years prior to mine, less people were accepted from TAP. If you really think about it though, TAP program designed to help students “perfect” their applications; and if your application is put together really, really well, you’re bound to have a higher chance of getting in.

@redoplease: You’re welcome! Swagg is essential to life in modern day society, mere confidence has the ability to take you far, even if you don’t have the brains or brawn to back it.

@Pyoro1: I actually thought about doubling up in society haha. Double-majoring is very doable just as long as you choose a major that doesn’t have a buttload of requirements. Also finishing off the pre-reqs to the major you want to double in will make it A LOT easier, cuz taking those pre-reqs at UC will slow you down and they can be difficult to get into sometimes.

@Investment: LOLLL, I will be honest with you, I actually think about the squirrels at berkeley a good amount. They are smart, fearless, and carefree. Squirrels there are SOOOO pampered too; everywhere you go you see squirrels getting fed by people. My first day going to class, I was walking with a bag of sun chips and a squirrel followed me (only about 2 inches away from my left foot) all the way to class, when I finally gave it a chip. People actually sit down with the squirrels and hand feed them! Lucky ■■■■■■■ squirrels. Oh, and the overwhelmingly majority of them are a darker shade of tan and with small black markings on the top side of their pelt, they are fairly large, but its more of a muscular large than a fat large like CCC squirrels. In terms of aggressiveness, I would say that they are really aggressive, just because of that fearlessness they have. Mannn, I’ve literally spent like 3 hours total over the course of the semester thinking about how awesome it would be to be a berkeley squirrel haha.

@emilsinclair9: You too man, I’m glad it helps you. If I recall correctly, you’re a psych major…you are gonna have a GREAT time at Cal haha, according to the people that I have talked to, almost all psych classes are not only interesting, but they tend to be really easy as well (my roommate took a psych course, 30% of the grade was based on attendance, and his midterm and final were fill in the blank and write out the full name of abbreviated terms (i.e. What does “MRI” stand for?)), nothing else, and it only took about 30 minutes according to him (finals are given 3 hours, most students take about 2.5 hours – at least in my classes they did), and he said it was the best class he’s taken so far.

@Pyoro1: I forgot to say that my minor are (1) Global Poverty, (2) Education (I chose this because I took an education class my first semester and it was really fun, and I heard that the other requirements for the minor are a lot more fun than the class I took), and (3) Forestry and Natural Resources.

I quoted you.

[| Berkeley Summer Sessions](2024 Summer Fees | Berkeley Summer Sessions)

that was supposed to say ~$130/unit damnnnn myyyyy badddd…i was off anyway haha

oh wait, I might have been thinking $1300/class cuz most major classes are 4 units, idk, its either it was supposed to be $130/unit or $1300/class, i dont remember what I was thinking about but oh well

^ Thanks for answering my q’s and message.

So according to this: [L&S Majors - Minors](http://ls-major.berkeley.edu/minorlist.html) do all minors require a minimum of 5 upper division courses to complete? No more, no less?

@Pyoro1: No, every minor is different, the Education minor for example has one core class, 3 electives, and field work. I believe 1 or 2 of the electives can be lower division. Global Poverty has 2 core classes, and 2 electives, and a reflection course (so from my point of view that’s not even 5 classes total). Honestly don’t worry too much about upper division courses, it’s not like its a major jump from lower division to upper division, I don’t plan on taking any lower division classes here (with the exception of one that I HAVE to take for my major).

oh and you can always do more, you just can’t do less than the minimum

@CalBearGuy: Thanks again for all the reassurance! I hope I do have a great time at Cal, and your knowledge of the psych major being interesting -and- easy…well, I guess I can’t complain! lol  I really do hope my classes are intriguing though! I’m taking a MWF 8:00 AM psych class, and with my sleeping habits or lack thereof, that class will hopefully provide further motivation to get up lol.

Anyway, I’ve been meaning to ask, have you joined any interesting clubs, sports, fraternities, or anything like that?

@emilsinclair9: awww dude 8am classes are all bad, you’ll go for the first few weeks, and then you’ll ace your first assignment/paper/test and you’ll never go again, trust me I know from experience hahaha, it sucks to have walk (especially up-hill) to class in the morning, it happened to me this semester, after the first month, I think I only went to like 6 lectures (1 was review for the midterm, 1 was the midterm itself, 1 to turn in a paper, 1 for finals review, and 1 for the final) and this was 9 am. Having to walk to class is what kills morning classes, at least for me.

I signed up for like 10 - 15 clubs (I’m not exaggerating when I say that I know like 100+ people at Cal, and I knew them before I transferred, so I was sucked into signing up by them) and I even signed up for the business frat cuz of another friend, but I honestly did nothing with the clubs and I deleted all the frat emails. I’ve played basketball and soccer there, but it wasn’t an official team or anything, it was just people playing on campus…oh ultimate frisbee, people always play that. You don’t have to be active to have a good time at berkeley, just walking around in the more “hidden” parts of campus is fun, just be adventurous and go everywhere, check out all the buildings, walk all the different paths, just sit down on some random bench around campus and chill. I’ll probably look into clubs a little but more this coming semester, since I’ve pretty much explored every part of the campus.

Exploring the campus sounds perfect. I’ll definitely be doing that lol. As for clubs/sports/fraternities, I’ll probably look into all 3 of those as well, but we’ll see!

As for the 8 AM class, it’s kind of like the core class in my major. Psych 101 is like the main upper division course I need to do. The psych advisors all said that the concepts pertain to many of the other courses too. Unfortunately, as of now, I have to take it. The good news is that it’s like a psych stats class, and I love stats. Thank you again for all the advice, man. I really appreciate it!

Thanks so much for this thread… I keep imagining what Cal is like and every question you have answered has just made me more excited to find out if I’m going to be accepted for next fall :)

A few of my own questions:
Did you honestly get treated any differently being a transfer student?
How did you find your off campus housing?
I’m sure there are tons of things that are not coming to mind right now… I’ll probably ask more later, hopefully you’re not busy.

Haha I can totally imagine how hard it might be getting to those early classes, I visited Berkeley this Summer and wow those hills haha :)

How hard is it for transfers to get research opportunities? Do you know of any former CCC students who have gone on to get PhDs?

I’ve heard that Cal is over the top hard. Was it hard to adjust from CCC courses to Berkeley courses? How are the Economics courses?

Do you recommend living in dorms the first year or finding an apartment?

How do you like the semester system? Do you feel like it drags on?

Up to this point, what were your experiences with GSIs like?

Sorry about all the questions. Hope you are enjoying your winter break.

i’m a spring transfer admit, meaning i will be walking the same hills as u on january 18th. I live in socal and i mean Berkeley has been the dream i’ve been chasing for the past 13 years. When i got in as a poly sci major i had to choose between ucla and ucb i chose berkeley because i never wanted to wonder what would happen if i didnt go. Im moving up on the 11th which is in like 9 days and i am FREAKING OUT… im not afraid of what berkeley will throw at me but i feel like i am gonna go through some major separation anxiety… which is bizarre because i hate living in socal and i’m moving in with friends that ive had since middle school. i dont know what it is but i’m scared of what i’m gonna miss while being gone u know?

do i sound like i’m dumb?

blehhh :(
