I have a quick question that maybe you guys could help me with. I am considering applying ED II to American but I just have a fear about something that I have heard from people. I heard that if you are not a die-hard political person you should not go to American. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy politics and find it interesting but, by no means I am a die hard politics person. I did have a U.S. Senator internship and I greatly enjoyed it but I am thinking of majoring in Communications. So, basically if you are not a die-hard political person will you be able to still fit in with people?

Thought I would answer some of the new questions.

Mikedog - Global Scholars are not secluded from the rest of the campus. However, you would be attending school during the summer in order to graduate in three years.

basketball762 - no, you do not have to be a die-hard political person There are a lot of people interested in politics and the SPA and SIS are popular. However, so is Communications. The political is there if you want it, but it is not necessary.

Just to answer a question about the Honors/Regular student division as mentioned earlier… I’m a freshman in the honors program but I currently live in Anderson which is a dorm hall for regular students and I can actually see a divide between the different “class” (for a lack of a better word) of students. I kind of get the best of both worlds and I wouldn’t say that honors students don’t have any regular friends but I would say there is kind of a clique within the honors program. I take two honors classes and yes I would say the students in these classes are friendly but I’m not friends with any of them they tend to hang out with the people in their dorms which I guess is normal of any college student. I won’t say that the divide between the honors kids and regular kids is huge but I would say there is a division there. I honestly enjoy living in Anderson it was newly renovated so it looks better than Hughes (in my opinion) and I’m still able to get to my friends in other dorms easily as most of the freshmen dorms are on that side of campus. I wouldn’t say you should definitely not live in Hughes but I would ask you to consider as a possible option!

My daughter is in honors and mos of her friends do not live in Hughes. Really depends on the contacts you make.

Any problem not being a Christian at AU?

I don’t think the majority of kids at AU practice any religion - although on paper there is a high number of Catholics and Jews. While AU is a United Methodist supported institution, it is not “religious” in the least. (Disclaimer: I’m a United Methodist pastor with a kid at AU. She is definitely in the minority as a practicing Christian.)

@Mdndad - If you need any more affirmation, I am an “atheist” at AU and I thought it might be a problem coming to AU/DC in general… but it really isn’t at all. At. All.

Is there a Global Scholar living community?

Because American is so close to DC, is there a big political presence on campus?

American is in the District of Columbia, and the people on campus are very political.

I’ve been admitted as a graduate student. Do you know if commuting to campus from the suburbs is common?

American is one or two metro stops from Bethesda. People commute in from the suburbs all the time. (My d. commutes in for her graduate program as well, but from the center of town.)

AU’s Academic Data Reference Book ([Academic Data Reference Book | OIRA | American University](Academic Data Reference Book | OIRA | American University | American University, Washington, DC)) has lots of info on class composition. Tables 10 and 14 may of use to you.
