hi all,

quick question:

1) one of my friends activated junior standing (in eng.) so instead of a rising sohpomore he's a rising junior. if he chooses to stay at cornell for a 4th year after his "senior" year, can he do so? or is he forced to leave cus he would have completed his senior year at that point

2) if he chooses to double major at the end of his senior year (3rd year) can he ask to stay back a 4th year?

I believe that it is just the opposite - he will be required to stay for the 4th year because there is an 8 semester “residency” requirement in order to graduate.

ah, he’s not a transfer. he just finished his freshman year at cornell. sorry for the confusion.

Ok, sorry about the confusion! Cornell encourages the 4th year even if a student is ahead in credits! This is from the Arts and Sciences requirements web-site (is that what he is in?):

"Eight semesters of full-time study in the College of Arts and Sciences are integral to earning the B.A. degree. Even if the minimum requirements can be met in fewer semesters, the faculty of the college expects students to take advantage of the resources of the university for eight full semesters and obtain as rich and advanced an education in the liberal arts and sciences as possible. Students may complete their undergraduate degrees with credits earned at other institutions or as part-time or summer students at Cornell only if they have completed their eight full-time semesters of residence or satisfied the criteria listed below under Prorated tuition in final semester.

So that said, he can graduate early if he desires to, but must apply for it or he can double major and take the forth year which is what Cornell encourages. In other words, he has lots of options that he can take advantage of by being ahead in credits.
