I have been planning to apply to grad school for IR for several months, but I'm apprehensive a/b my qualifications, and for what caliber schools I should shoot.

The good: GRE scores (V-750, Q-650); strong recommendations from two well known academics; final two years of school w/ 3.2 GPA, 3.7 in POLI/ECON degree (overall GPA is not nearly as steady).

The bad: Took two involuntary years off from school to deal w/ alcohol/drug abuse (no legal charges or criminal record, thankfully); terrible grades in the years during which this activity occurred; applying from lightly regarded State U.

I've applied to the Peace Corps as well, not least of all b/c I presume it would be an asset in applying for an MA if/when I return. That said, I'd also be very excited to spend two years abroad doing service.

I have no illusions a/b securing acceptance to the finer IR schools, but I'd like to know if there are any well regarded second tier programs out there that might be willing to gamble on someone with a compelling personal narrative, to say the least. Thanks.
