Yeah, it's really frustrating, this whole workout routine thing.
I gave it up this summer when I went to Italy and i gained a bunch of weight...it's off now that i'm back in my routine, but it's essential to my health! i wish they would just let us be about the whole exercize t hing...
I got into mcgill and actually i almost sent in my deposit and everything b/c i wasn't planning on getting into Barnard. So...i almost went...but then my letter came...nice school with lots of freedom, but a bit cold...

You guys might want to try signing up for dance -- Barnard has classes for beginners as well as experienced dancers. If you want a great workout, ballet is wonderful. My daughter is the dancer in the family -- I'm a total klutz -- but when she was a kid I signed up for an adult beginner ballet class at her studio and really enjoyed it.

The only thing is, if you want to get your PE done in the the fall, then when you pre-enroll in the summer, you have to make a choice between dance or other forms of PE -- that's because they make a point of holding spots open in the fall for a certain number of first year students who want to take PE - so you have to let them know if you are going to want one.

I have a question.

Why isn't Barnard College on the list of schools in the stats profiles anymore? It definitely was there a couple weeks ago.

I was going to ask that too...I had marked that I was attending and everything. Grrr...

calmom--I was thinking about doing Indian dance, ballet, or jazz. I am in love with dance, but haven't had a chance to take it on since I was 10.

Barnard is on the pull-down list of colleges you can "search" on the stats profiles page...

I just checked.

Yeahhh there it is. (:
Maybe it's just in and out, or someone in charge saw this. Haha.

Question: On Barnard's website, it says they will give 30 credits for receiving the IB diploma. What does this entail? Would I get sophomore standing? If so, what does that mean in terms of signing up for classes? Will I get exempt from some intro classes/nine ways of knowing? Can I graduate early?

Also, does anyone know how competitive the BA/MIA (Masters in International Affairs) program is?

Thanks!

Do many girls take 9am classes?
How early do girls wake up?
Do most eat breakfast? Do they workout/do sports in the morning or at night?

Also...I was looking at the course book online with all the times of classes and such...and I was planning on taking elementary modern greek I...it was at 2 in the afternoon, and they just moved it to 9 am. do they switch classes around like this a lot? is this move permanent?

coffeetoffee -- I am sure Barnard has all kinds -- early risers and night owls, girls who sign up for 9 am classes, girls who prefer afternoon and evening classes -- girls who are up with birds and eating a full breakfast, and girls who drag themselves out of bed 5 minutes before their 11 am class starts and show up to class bleary eyed.

My daughter likes to sleep and I don't think she has taken any classes that start before 10:30 am -- but then when she has had morning opens, she has ended up scheduling her work study hours for the mornings -- so if she didn't have a class until noon, she was getting up for work at 9 am anyway.

As to the change: I haven't seen time changes for any of my daughter's classes and I don't think you would ordinarily see that in the fall, once the semester begins -- although I do remember that the first year studies course that my daughter really wanted was canceled last year, I guess due to a change of the professor's plans. These things happen at any college.

Coffee, I have been through the annyoing time change thing. It doesn't happen often, but just be glad you aren't a junior trying to graduate on time like me! It usually happens if there is a change of professor for the class or a room conflict. If they move it once, though, I don't think they'll move it again.

As for whether or not girls get up at 9am, I think calmom did a good job answering that. I will say however, that the dining hall is always full for breakfast and food usually runs out after awhile. Also, I have been visiting the gym at opening this semester and it has been pretty empty at that time...I think the busiest I usually see it is between 3 and 6pm.

I'd like to add -- I might be mistaken, but I think that the roommate questionnaire for incoming students does ask preference in terms of hours (night owl vs. early riser) -- so if you like sleeping in and are worried about being woken up at an unspeakable hour by some cheery, chirping early-to-riser .... I think they will do their best to match you with someone who keeps similar hours and has roughly the same tolerance for noise.

How are the gym facilities? What kind of machines do they have (is it like a normal health club)?

honied, don't get your hopes up. The gym here is the size of, say, two double dorm rooms. It's quite small, but it does the job for the number of students we have here. There are all types of machines - stair climbers, ellipticals, tradmills, stationary and recumbent bikes, and even a new rowing machine. There is also weight training equipment there.

Also, remember that you can use the facilities at Dodge. I REALLY don't like Dodge (and you may often be waiting for a machine), but it will do if I'm over at Columbia for something and don't want to go all the way back to Barnard. Dodge has a huge running / walking track (so does Barnard, but it scares me...) and some weight training and cardio equipment. There is also a huge basketball court and a pool (don't know the rules for either, though).

Thanks! Doesn't sound any worse than what I'm used to in my town! I'm definitely not expecting an Oprah-style gym.

I like the Barnard track (despite not being allowed to run during archery class...), because if you run 50 or 100 miles in a semester you get a free t-shirt. :) I guess you could run in Dodge and keep track of your miles at Barnard, though.

So, since i want to get my science over with, i'm looking into physics for poets (C1001-1002)...
i looked at the course pencil book thing and so far there are 73 students signed up and no defined max. do you think i'll be able to get into it?
