"None" always takes on a plural pronoun, right? What are some other words like none that take on strictly plural or singular terms? (i.e - each, everybody, many)

thanks

I've always learned that none is singular. None = not none, squished together.

None of the jelly beans tastes good.

Each is singular, everybody is singular, many is plural.

Well, think about it logically:

Person - singular
People- more than 1 so plural

Each People? That really does not make sense
Each person( The definition of each is its talking about one thing.. so it must be singular)

Many persons? That doesnt make sense
Many( people) .. this makes sense since many is plural and people is plural......

i hope that helps.. if its confusing.. scratch w/e i said..

None is often singular, meaning "not one" (which is probably what amb3r meant to type). But it's not exclusively so.

The American Heritage dictionary says, "the word has been used as both a singular and a plural noun from Old English onward. The plural usage appears in the King James Bible as well as the works of John Dryden and Edmund Burke and is widespread in the works of respectable writers today."

There are times when "none" means "not any," and in those cases, it makes sense (and is correct) for it to take the plural.

So - when the sense is plural (none as "not any") none is plural; when the sense is singular (none as "not one"), none is singular.

Or if this makes it easier to remember:

<<when "none"="" means="" "none="" of="" them,"="" its="" plural.="" example:="" the="" cookies="" were="" eaten."="" when="" it,"="" singular.="" cake="" was="" if="" you="" really="" do="" mean="" not="" one,="" why="" not="" simply="" say="" one?="">> (That's Patricia O'Conner, WOE IS I and WORDS FAIL ME and so on.)</when>
