Quick Guide to AP Psychology Self-Study

<p>ok so i have the barrons review book and i have heard to memorize it cover to cover. But im wondering, is that all the material you need in the barrons book? It seems quite small and a lot of it is just practice exams so how is that even enough for the tests</p>

<p>It may not cover 100% of the test’s content, but it does cover the vast majority of the test, which is more than good enough for a 5.</p>

<p>AP pysch is one of the best APs to self study because there r no labs to be completed and no complicated math problems. All u have to do is read and memorize the info in the textbook. U could always ask someone about a few confusing topics but it is a good class to self study for and quite interesting! Before the test, look up a few review packets to help u cover the main points u need to know because the textbook can be long and too detailed sometimes with too many examples. Also, it has a lot of common sense questions. I am not really a person to agree with self studying but for ap pysch, I say go for it!</p>

<p>Is studying in September okay? Or is that to early?</p>

<p>I self studied AP Psych last year as a Junior and I started studying in September. Literally all I did was go through the Barron’s Book, highlighting anything I thought was important. After I went through the book once, I went back and reread all my highlighted notes. I went through the book a 3rd time just for good measure about a week before the exam. Got a 5 on the exam. Here my breakdown:

  1. I suggest you start self studying in September so you can be done by the book by winter break in February. (At least that’s what I did).
  2. Try to get through as much pages in the chapter each week. I only looked at the book 3 days a week, but if you have the time and want to look at the book more than 3 days a week, then go right ahead! You’ll be done with the book even sooner than February!
  3. Be sure to highlight everything you think is important so these are the only words you will be reading come your second time of going through the book.
  4. Try to be consistent when studying especially when going through the book the first time. I only looked at it for 3 days a week but I looked at the book each week.
  5. After going through the book a first time, and second time, going through the book is at your leisurely pace at this time depending on how much time you have until the test. I do recommend looking at the entire book for a 3rd time. </p>

<p>I should also add that I finished the book in February but didn’t touch the book again until April when I reread all my highlighted notes.
***Note that if you’re a Junior that you have the SAT to study for and other AP tests to study for. So that month when I took a break off AP Psych was spent on studying the SAT.
I read the book for the 3rd time a week before the test.
It’s a lot of work cause you’re self studying for an AP test and it’s more effort coming from yourself, but remember it’s DOABLE. I remember my friends thinking I was insane for wanting to self study for an AP test. Well, I felt it was an easy 5 and now I have teachers in the faculty room praising me that I self studied and scored a 5 on AP Psych. =]
Good luck!</p>

<p>It’s never too early to study - especially if you are self-studying. It takes a bit to become self-motivated and the earlier you are able to get into the flow of self-studying, the easier it becomes. </p>

<p>The problem I have with using just books is that it’s hard to track which topics you are doing well in and which topics you need to understand better and to focus on. A lot of the platforms online are able to track your progress easily for you and is super user-friendly so I would recommend supplementing your books with an online prep tool. Look into something like Learnerator ([AP</a> Psychology - Subject Guide](<a href=“http://www.learnerator.com/ap-psychology/subject-guide]AP”>http://www.learnerator.com/ap-psychology/subject-guide)). It’s an AP focused exam prep tool that is very user-friendly and contains a ton of practice questions that are developed by AP teachers.</p>

<p>I think it’s always useful to supplement your textbooks with an easily accessible online exam prep resource. Don’t know if anyone has experience with online exam prep?</p>

<p>sorry I haven’t been on this thread for such a long time haha… just posting on this again in case anyone this year might be interested in self-studying! </p>

<p>I just started studying this evening, I finished the first section of the Baron’s review book, with the history of Psychology, and I did somewhat mediocre on the review quiz, mainly because I forgot some of the terms and famous Psychologists. Should I be concerned? What should I do that make sure I remember everything? Or is it not a big deal and I should just continue studying as normal?</p>

<p>I am self-studying AP Psychology as well. I find it difficult for form my own way to study. How do I study the FRQ’s? And how frequently should I be tested on a FRQ? Like for example, after how many chapters of reading AP Psych should I be expected to test on a FRQ? I find this the hardest part for me. </p>

@bowling555‌ You can check out AP Central for the old AP exams for Psychology. Familiarize yourself with the way the CollegeBoard phrases questions and then think about how you would approach each question. I recommend outlining how you would answer the question if you were taking the test. Then, closer to the test start taking timed practice FRQs. Find someone to proctor you–a friend, a parent, a teacher, etc.

Thanks!!! I’m self studying for this exam this year. This is extremely useful

I’m thinking about self-studying for this course. Would you recommend getting the Myer’s textbook as well with Barron’s and the Princeton review or just those two? Also, how do those books work? I’ve ordered both for the AP human geography course that I’m currently taking but I don’t know how the lessons are taught. Are they taught similarly or just reviews of what you should learn in the textbook? I’m worried that if I order them and they just review information that I would have bought them for no reason. Please respond as soon as you can as I would greatly appreciate it, thanks

I’ve already figured everything out so no need to respond to my previous questions
