Quick PSAT/SAT question

Hello. Atm, I'm a Junior in HS, someone told me I needed to take the PSAT this year alongside the SAT because the 11th grade PSAT is the one that 'counts' for scholarships.

However, I've taken the PSAT two consecutive years already, once in 9th grade and again in 10th grade. Am I suppose to take it yet again or is just SAT I'm required to take?

Thanks all.

You can only win a National Merit scholarship with a score from junior year. The info on the college board site and publications is pretty clear on this. But I think it was given this week?

Not sure if anyone else would use the PSAT scores for anything. Not that I’m aware of.

I gave it a quick skim and from what I gathered:

You need to get a high score to enter the competition
Be a finalist in the competition
Max reward is the $2500 scholarship

Did I miss anything?

Max reward is officially $2500/year scholarship, but some schools (mostly in the South) grant additional scholarships that add up to 4-year full ride or better. Cutoff score for National Merit are different in different states, so it may be easier or harder depending on where you are.

Cutoffs by state: <a href=“***Class Of 2015 NMSF Qualifying Scores*** - #2806 by PizzasStar - National Merit Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/1580340-class-of-2015-nmsf-qualifying-scores-p188.html</a></p>

Thanks for the cutoff info. One more thing, it says this: take the PSAT/NMSQT® in the specified year of the high school program

How do I tell what my specified year is? I know matty mentioned 11th grade is the only year but that piece of info right there throws me off.

Mathyone is right; junior year is the only year that counts for NMSQT (unless someone is graduating junior year).

TAKE THE PSAT! my son took it last year (it should be coming up SOON) and was just named a semi-finalist. He is getting bombarded with offers. If you have the grades and scores to back up a great psat score, you are in great shape. There are several schools that have already offered him a free ride, and wherever he ends up, it is going to be with a great scholarship. SO, if you are a good student, take the test.

Alright, I’ll definitely be taking it then. Do you guys believe a tutor is superior to self-studying?

What are the best PSAT review books/study methods?
