Quick SOP question: How to refer to professors

I want to include some professor names in my SOP. particularly, relevant professors I have worked for and those I would like to work with in the program of interest.

This might be a trivial question, but how do I refer to professors in my essay?

For example if the prof's name is John Doe.

Do I say I would like to work with Dr. Doe?
Or I would like to work with Dr. John Doe?
Or I would like to work with John Doe.
etc...

It's probably insignificant, but just in case. I don't want them declining my application because I failed to refer to a professor correctly.

On the first reference use the title and full name. “Prof. John Doe” or “Dr. John Doe”, thereafter, just “Prof. Doe” or “Dr. Doe”.

Thank you.

Is prof. or Dr. better? Or does either work?

Either. The way I look at it, Dr. is what I earned and Prof. is what I do.

Dr. could be someone at a research facility or staff at a university. Professor denotes someone that (with almost 100% probability) has a doctorate. I imagine Professor would actually be a better way to write it, since it shows you were working with someone that deals with students on a regular basis, and likely has the ability to compare you with others in a reasonable manner (provided they’re writing a letter of recommendation).

Oh I see.

Isn’t the abbreviation “Prof.” slang? Or is it actually a form way to address
a professor?
