I’ve been a part of the Speech & Debate Team for 3 years now. Although I quit in the middle of freshman year. So I’m not sure if I would have to put that I only did it sophomore & junior year. Anyway, going into my senior year, I was definitely planning on continuing it but this summer I got a retail job and I want to keep the job so now my plans have changed & I don’t have time for debate since tournaments are on weekends and it is very time consuming. Will this hinder my application? I feel like it looks bad to quit a team for a job because it will look like I can’t handle the pressure. Apart from this, I’ve done choir all of my years of highschool and will continue to do it senior year along with my job. Choir is just less demanding than debate, so I thought I’d to stick it. Any thoughts?
Also, can I include that I got a job senior year on my application?
For what it’s worth, I did Speech and Debate as a Senior, even though I was working in a restaurant. (And went to States and Nationals-- where I had laryngitis!! But I digress )
You would need not to work Saturdays during the day. I imagine you could juggle things so you worked Friday nights and all day Sunday, and whichever weekday evenings you were needed.
Talk to the people at your job, and see whether it’s possible.
And there’s a place on the app that asks for work experience. So, yes, it would be included.
A job is considered an important EC if you stick to it and do a lot of hours.
However, your EC’s have both an intrinsic value (for yourself) and relative value (for colleges). Only you know how much you enjoy your activities and what you learn from them. For college admission purpose, those EC’s vary. They won’t have the same value to MIT, SDSU, a LAC, and your flagship’s honors program. So what colleges are you applying to?
I would continue Debate, but the thing is that I have choir too, which is also very time consuming. So I feel like I’m in this position to choose which one I quit senior year for my job. I know that obviously anythings possible & that I can do all 3 but I don’t want to stress myself out either.
I’d really like to get into PSU or Syracuse Univsersity
For PSu 2/3 decision rests on your gpa. EC’s won’t really matter much. However applying as close to today and absolutely before Nov 30 will play a role.
For Syracuse choir + a job will be okay IF AND ONLY IF you have competitive test scores and gpa and are not applying to either new house or engineering.
Obviously apply to more than these two !
My kids found Speech to be much less time consuming than debate (but it probably depends on your category). If you have the job to earn money for college, you could probably put a note in additional information if you quit debate. Something like, “Did not participate in Debate in senior year due to part time job to earn money for college.”
The short answer is that your job will count as an EC so if you work instead of doing debate you should be just fine.
