I wonder how many newspapers went to bed before the President’s announcement and totally missed out.

It’ll also be interesting to see what is regarded as bin Laden’s date of death, as he was apparently killed on May 2 local time.

3:30 PM EST + 9 hours = 12:30 AM

So yeah, it will just be May 2nd, they go by local time for such things.

I thought he was killed last week by a missile.

That was a false report.

But people were talking about it in class on Friday

Over 1/18 the way there, incidentally.

I wonder how many old people will only find out about this when they open up their newspaper tomorrow morning.

People next door are middle-aged* and go to bed at 8pm, so they missed out.

*They are in their 40s, yet have a baby, who is their only child. People are having kids way too late nowadays.

And no one noticed this for all these years?

Liked this bit: “Why is the IRA coming back ?”

Yes, yes we are.

Apparently the US has known about it for a while and suspected that the person hiding there was bin Laden. It seems like last August they decided that it was him and they’ve been planning since then.

Of course the location certainly raises questions about Pakistani complicity.

The US didn’t tell Pakistan about this, so they likely didn’t trust that there wouldn’t be an informant in the government.

Of course Pakistan is saying that they played a vital role. The diplomatic shake out will be interesting.

The role of “battleground.”

This story is very reminiscent of Day of the Jackal

Never read it.

It’s an excellent book about a French revolutionary group’s attempts to assassinate Charles De Gaulle. The bulk of the book follows the assassin and the attempts to locate the assassin in parallel. It’s also an excellent movie, starring Edward Fox (an English acting legend).

From the WH press briefing, via the Guardian

I’ll have to look into it.

Ah, the final final is finally finished.

Both the book and movie have a pair of sex scenes too (though it’s somewhat cursory in the latter), if that’s the type of thing you’re into.

Also, this looks so peaceful.
