I know that this topic has been covered within Rose-Hulman itself, but how's racism outside the campus?

Google comes up with how Indiana citizens are still indirectly racist.

Would love more info.

are you white, azn, or black?

asian. 10char

Ok… I am not sure about the rest of Indiana, but I am sure you will be fine at Rose. There are like several Chinese kids on campus and they feel quite at home.

Thanks =P that’s reassuring.

hahaha azn ftw!

There are morons in every town, but what Google is referring to is other areas of Indiana (Martinsville, Mooresville, southern Indiana etc.). Terre Haute actually has a decent cultural mix for small city Indiana. As is the case everywhere, the less education in a given area, the higher the level of racism and bigotry.

While things went well during my visit…it felt like some of the staff from both parts of ventures and the actual school itself weren’t as welcoming as I’d like to be. Maybe a tid bit condescending.

they were probably just acting normal I guess, nothing particular to your race. People condescend to others for a variety of reasons; it doesn’t have to be racial. LOL, maybe you were just too pumped at the beginning, and when others didn’t treat you with promptness / zeal, you might feel a bit down. I think it makes sense for ventures people to be not as enthusiastic about high schoolers making their decision. After all, they are running a business with industry clients.

I’ts more along the lines that they seemed to be more warm and welcoming to other families while we felt a little ignored.

I really enjoyed my last overnight visit, but I would have to agree. The students seem perfectly fine. The staff, however, did not impress me. They seemed condescending. Also they weren’t very welcoming to the school. It seemed like more of a “well our school is the best” attitude. Rose-Hulman may be ranked highly, but they are not the #1 undergraduate engineering school. That spot has long been held by MIT. I was however overly impressed with the students, which I have stated a lot throughout this forum. They were extremely friendly and more than happy to answer anything and keep me involved while I was there. To me, the professors I saw seemed average. I sat in on one of the classes and was not impressed. The technology of the classroom was great and the professor was very nice, but she was not very effective at teaching. It definitely was not one of those moments where I would want to sign up for the profs class right away.

Don’t get me wrong though, I am now an avid Rose-Hulman fan after learning a lot more about the school. However, there is still plenty of room, like any school, for improvement. I just found it funny that you should mention this about the staff because I got the exact same impression.

First off, sincere apologies for any perceived slight on your visits.

redfedora711, your situation is exactly why I have stated in other topics on this website that if you are an admitted senior, you should NOT visit on a large group visit day. In that situation, you are one of over a hundred students visiting during the same 3 1/2 hour time period with only five admissions counselors to cover.

Contrast that with my visitor this morning from Arizona. He was my full responsibility for the morning and had my full focus. He and his parents were able to have their own tour guide as well as meet one-on-one with me, two different Department Chairs (ABBE and PHOE), and the swim coach.

If there are any juniors reading this forum, please take notes and plan a post admission offer visit accordingly.

Unfortunately, perception is reality and we have some things to work on if we are coming off as condescending. I have worked closely with the faculty and staff at Rose-Hulman for five years now and I am proud to associate with folks so focused on the needs and success of our students. Please, redfedora711 and Salve!, PM me with specifics on what you experienced so that we can improve on the perceptions we create–intended or otherwise.

I wonder how and when a RH student can be a part of this program?

I see that it is designed for Fr-Sr. Not sure of the eligibility criteria to get in, or what is entailed. YEs,I will contact them. Anyone with experience or knowledge also chime in here?

Ventures gets projects from companies, and then full time project managers hire students like they would for any other job. Students send in their resumes or talk to Ventures at the career fairs and if there is a position that fits them they will go for an interview.
