Racist joke article in Daily Princetonian

Um, yes, the article was written in jest. That, Mr. Evil Asian Dictator, is what "joke" issues are for. And um, yes, you made seriously racist statements when you claimed that the writers of the Jian Li article were a bunch of disgruntled, jealous white people. (Some of them were actually Asian, but that is off the point.) True, Asians generally outperform whites in the areas of math and science. However, judging individuals by the the general performance of their race in a certain area constitutes racism. (Get it? "Racism" comes from "race.") In other words: you don't know anything about the writers of the article, but you made conclusions about them (and not just any conclusions - you came down on them hard) because of what you thought was their race. And your statements were made in a non-jesting way, hance my claim that they were "serious." Understand, buddy?

Ernie H., if you are going to deny that white is a privileged race in america, then our discussion end here---your posts do not merit responses

learn the difference between a fact and a racist remark

psychotickevin, there is a BIG difference between saying that many, even most white people in America today are privileged and claiming that "white is a privileged race." I agree with the former statement; the latter is racist. There are many poor whites and there are many rich blacks/hispanics. A white person is not privileged because he/she is white, but because his/her family is well off.

Mind you, I don't feel insulted when people stereotype whites like that. Did you watch the video clip that someone posted about the "preppy gangstas" or something like that? I thought it was hilarious, even though it played on a negative stereotype of whites.

I am just sick of people getting so riled up about "racist" remarks. That is why I jumped on you like that after your remark about whites - I was trying to show how rediculous it is to get offended over something like that.

"while discrimination is no longer in vogue, it is still very much alive (as the article indicates)."

The article was written by asians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

did you READ my whole, entire post? I said that the only reason I was jumping over the stereotypes about whites was to show how rediculous it is to get offended over something like that.

Evidently you didn't catch the sarcasm.

Woops, my bad. I totally didn't understand your post. :o
I have deleted my previous post, and I apologize.

I wouldn't know. There haven't been any Asians in my Classics, Philosophy, English, History, Art History, or Geology classes- despite the fact that they make up 24% of Duke's student body.

In the one class I've had with Asians (Organic Chem), they didn't seem to fare any better (or worse) than the rest of us.

no problem, weasel8488. Say, are you really in Siberia? I get the feeling you're not, but it can't hurt to check:)

may i call u another dukie? or whatever you are. The fact that you haven't seen any doesn't make it that they don't exist in those classes. Most immigrants are asians and hispanic. When you come into a country when you don't speak the language, all you can recognize in a class is the math, would you wanna major in those areas like english, history, politics ... where american (of whatever race) already had a head start? or you would more likely to major in the math and sciences?

Also the last sentence seem to be a generalization. "they didn't seem to fare any better (or worse) than the rest of us". Like you talked to all the asians in the class and they showed u that their scores are at the bottom. Oh or maybe Duke professor shows a statistics "here we go, see these asians at the bottom of the pile? and the rest of us are up there". Maybe Duke professors did that, i don't know. Duke sucks anyway, didn't regret a second not going there. At least i don't find any of those people who think or talk like this.

chaoses, he said that Asians didn't fare any better or worse than everyone else, meaning that Asians and whites were at about the same level.

Otherwise, I don't want to get involved in this. Just wanted to clarify something.
Carry on...

Is it ironic that I had just written exactly what btlesgirl wrote but decided to delete it because I didn't want to get involved? Great minds think alike!

Most definitely! :)

Certainly! Or warblers, warblersrule, WR86, or an epithet of your own creation. I don't mind. :)

Exactly. :)

If this joke was made by a comedian or a misinformed, ignorant prankster, then it would not cause much offense. The fact that it came from Princeton is disheartening to say the very least. You have some of the supposedly top students in the nation carrying around such views and publicly expressing them, and then covering it as a jest. That is offending. A retaliation is fine, but retaliate against the person, now his entire race.

The fact that some of the writers are Asian is even worse.

Ernie,

The Prep Unit video featured Whites making fun of a certain group of Whites.

The article in the Daily Princetonian was written by mostly Whites. Judging by last names, there were two Asians - an Indian and a Chinese.

Considering that India feuds with China and (some) Whites think it's OK to push Asians, it doesn't surprise me that the article turned out to be crap, Asian input or not.

hey guys. where did you find out about the authors? can you pm me the link? thanks in advance

oh if that's what he meant, it's ok then, it's not as bad. He shoulda put "asians didn't fare any better / worse" that would clarify it more. On the other hand, he said "asians didn't fare any better (or worse)" that makes me think the stuff in ( ) means Asians didn't fare any better, or another way of putting it is asian fare worse. That was what I thought.

A minor point of clarification. Several posters have attributed the Lian Ji parody to the Princetonian Editorial Board. In fact, it is my understanding that the Princeton Editorial Board is independent of the news side of the paper, which produces the joke issue, and that members of the editorial board were not involved in writing the Lian Ji piece, which ran as a mock opinion piece -- not an editorial. The editorial board is solely responsible for Daily Princetonian editorials and the editorials are the sole responsibility of the editorial board. See http://www.dailyprincetonian.com:80/archives/2006/10/02/opinion/16006.shtml for more information on how “the Prince” is organized. I would not be surprised if the editorial board weighs in on the matter in a future issue.

"think twice before believing that you can just "laugh it off". your feelings may not have been hurt because of the public racism. someone else's are. be a little bit more considerate and mature in your uninformed statements"

... When I care for your opinion about whether or not I am informed, I'll formally address you. Thanks.

"pbbbt this is american, of course there aren't that many asian leaders / politicians. Go to Asia and see there are a bunch, so the comparison doesn't fly. Plus, asian immigrants in america are more into other stuff than politics since asians don't have a freaking head start about laws and crap like that because many of them aren't born here. You don't wanna go to China to study politics in chinese do u? There is asian president in non-asian countries too. As to consider politicans "leaders" why not consider engineers leaders? how many top 50 world scientists are american (white), I can surely count on my toes."

You don't make much sense. Your comparisons just don't add up for me. I don't even really know how to form a statement against that.

I don't know. The kids that get their panties in a bunch over stuff like this are who make me want to just go to my state school. I miss the days of Old Money and the Good Ol' Boys... before kids threw hissy fits on the internet over T0t4lly r4ci57 articles.

Haha I don't even know what to say. This topic has me so frustrated...
