My church has a program that sends help and money for starving kids in Africa.

I am a rising senior, and thinking about making a club that would help raise money for this program.
I have a lot of ideas to raise money really easily and quickly, and that is the primary reason for me to make this club.

My question is... I know this is cliche, but will this be seen as application padding, and may even hurt my college chances? i am already involved in a few other EC's.

I think that’s awesome…its kinda sad these days that students might hesitate to do something good in fear of colleges looking down upon it

It only would be perceived as resume padding if that’s how you present it. For instance, if an interviewer asked why you started the project, and you replied, “I want to impress colleges,” that wouldn’t impress colleges. Otherwise, colleges aren’t going to view what you’re doing negatively. When it comes to the top colleges – which in general are the few colleges that factor ECs, community service, etc. into admission – most of their alum and probably staff and faculty do community service – for the pure pleasure of making a difference. Unless you present your project to them from a self interest perspective, they’d assume that you, too, want to help others. Whether your actions will cause you to stand out enough to be admitted, however, no one knows.

I think that by itself is such a great idea.

Its not exactly the fact that I specifically am focused to help kids in africa,
Its mostly because I just believe that I can raise a lot of money, and it’d be the best way to make a difference and give back you know?
and yes I am applying to top colleges.

But it could be for any cause though. Do you guys have any ideas for a good cause I could raise money for?
and how much money in the timespan of 4 months is a lot of money? hahaha.

I recently read that aid to Haiti has been dropping even though the people there are still struggling after the catastrophic earthquake that occurred months ago. That could be a place to raise funds for.
