@doschicos I can now check today’s “Learn Something New” box and it’s only 8:30 in the morning - thanks!

My med school lad wears camp collar shirts pretty much all the time for casual wear. H has plenty too. I assume they are comfortable.

I’ll have to look around to see if I notice button down collars in use. I know H still has some in his closet from the last time they were in style - not sure they fit anymore though. They certainly haven’t been worn in ages. I had thought about donating them, but figured no one would want them so in the closet they sit. It’s amazing how some styles repeat themselves and each time they appear someone thinks they’re new and creative. Med school lad currently wears the dress shirt H wore when we left for our honeymoon 30+ years ago. He tells us he can’t count the number of compliments and “where’d you get it” questions he’s received. Perhaps next time we’re both at home I need to let him “shop” on H’s side of the closet!

I think button down collared shirts are a classic look and will never be out of style among a certain, preppy set.

My son raided my husband’s closet and buys vintage shirts as well and gets tons of compliments on his look.

A shameless plug for donating gently used clothing. Many people in need are more concerned with having something that covers them and hopefully fits. Being on trend is far down on the priority list.

@skieurope Around us the thrift stores get quite a bit donated. At times they aren’t even taking clothing donations except for certain sizes (XXL being the last one I recall). In general, they sift through things that are donated and if worn, stained, or out of style they toss them (according to a young lass I knew from school who worked there), so I figured I’d save them the trouble.

In different areas, this could very well be different.

Which is why I mentioned “gently worn.” Yes, do not donate stuff that is about to fall apart or is badly stained (although perhaps how stained is too stained may be relative). Out of style may well vary, but I’d err on the side of letting the donation center decide. Button-down shirts or a denim that is not this year’s shade of wash or boot cut jeans would likely be accepted. Lacy slip dresses or pirate pants should be burned.

Search out a Goodwill near you.

"Torn or stained apparel, linens, single shoes, gloves and socks were once considered garbage. Goodwill accepts ALL textile donations, in any condition (except wet or contaminated with hazardous materials) so they can be re-used or recycled into new products.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that textile waste accounts for nearly 5% of all landfill space. Recyclers like Goodwill keep approximately 3.8 billion pounds of post-consumer textile waste (PCTW) out of the landfills. On average, US citizens throw away about 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles each year. The Facts About Textile Waste https://harmony1.com/textile-waste-infographic/

So now when you drop off your donations to Goodwill, include those mismatched socks, old, tired sheets and worn shoes, because you are doing your part to keep unnecessary waste out of the landfill."

@lookingforward and @BunsenBurner I agree - the Supreme stuff is nuts but S23 loves it. I will get him some of the lower priced stuff for things like Christmas and birthday. This time I got him a plain t-shirt that he will be able to wear next year in high school as a present for getting the highest score on the state level algebra 1 test - a class that he struggled with and we were so proud that he crushed the end of course exam. He got super lucky once when our friend went to China to visit a factory that happened to be next to the Supreme factory- he got a boat load of stuff for S23 for free.

@doschicos You are definitely right about getting votes for being different from most politicians!

That’s interesting about Goodwill. We never considered donating things that were unwearable. St. Vincent de Paul is who we usually donate to, but it might be better to donate to Goodwill, if they can recycle what they don’t sell.

“Recycled into new products” can mean a reseller collects them. Unsellables from Savers used to end up in Romania (or somewhere) to be made into batting for car engines. Took me a while to get used to something of ours ending up that way. Your odd fact of the day.

Or many places donate good unsellables to a local church where the need is high. I agree, donate, where you can. No reason not to.

Anything being repurposed and staying out of a landfill for a little longer is a good thing, IMO.

I would think that textiles of any kind would be recyclable. Why not make them into new textiles for clothing, rope, insulation, etc.? It’s probably been cheaper to just dump them in landfills but we need to evolve in that area.

My engineer husband wore short sleeved sport shirts to work a good part of the year unless it was cold or he had to wear a tie. There were days when the temp in his area was 85. (I worked in a different area of the same building and it would be 65 at the same time.) He’d buy them at Nordstrom, EB, Costco for the most part. Fun days were when the guys all had matching outfits.
(He also has a medical issue w/excess perspiration and better short sleeves than spending a warm day drenched.)

I started a new thread about this in the cafe. I’m unsure how to transfer the responses.

And thanks to all who responded.

You can’t, but I can and will

edited to add: and I did.

Is there a way to tell Amazon that we don’t want them to ship to us via USPS? I was expecting a delivery today and all of a sudden I got an email stating that they attempted delivery and could not leave it because there is no secure location. I have been home all day and there is an enclosed porch they have access to in case I didn’t hear the door.

UPS and Fed Ex will leave it.

Usps does this all the time in Chicago where I live. I then go the next day at 8:00 to get my delivery. I have actually called Amazon. There is no way for them to determine which method they will use unless it’s a choice of delivery when you buy it. But they do record the complaints.
I just have it delivered to the Whole Foods by me. That will usually add an extra day delivery even if using prime but at least I can get it when I need it. Plus can pick up some milk also ??.

So if I want to post something about international MBA VS United States MBA programs where would I put that in? Thx
