Funny, my sister is a long time postal carrier. She says what ever is happening just shouldn’t.
She knows like everyone on her route. She wishes them happy birthday. She knows their first names. They get her holiday gifts. She knows many of the children’s names… She goes out of her way for her customers…
When did this type of work ethic stop?
Probably when they stopped hiring jobs covered by the union, and now only hire part time/temporary workers at half the pay.
Yep. My sister is a union delegate. She has a great pension. They are also trying to force out the older workers like her on the local level…
We probably have very good, hardworking USPS employees here where I live… at all addresses we have lived, mail delivery was never a problem. I probably just jinxed it. It probably also helps that we have a lockable mailbox that is impossible to crush with a baseball bat (some neighbors still have those rural tin can ones).
Our old mail carrier who retired last summer used to get out of his truck just to give my dogs a biscuit. He told me once he wasn’t supposed to but he did it anyway. The new mail carrier is afraid to get out of the truck for fear the dogs will attack him.
Our mail delivery is awful. On a regular basis, our mail isn’t delivered til 5:30pm or later. It was even worse in December - then we might not get mail til after 9pm if we got it at all. I still suspect that mail isn’t delivered if he’s running really late.
Before I switched to getting all bank statements and credit card bills electronically, I know there were at least 2 bank statements we never received.
Our mail carrier gets out of his truck every day if my neighbor’s dogs are outside. He gets down on the ground and rolls around with them (just timed him - he was out of his truck for a minute and a half…). A couple of weeks ago my husband happened to be outside when he saw the truck so he walked to our mailbox to wait for him. When he (eventually) got to our box, the mailman offered to scratch my husband behind his ears. I thought it was funny but my husband wasn’t as amused. I just wonder how many dogs are on this guy’s route and how much longer it takes him.
New question: Have you taken a full (practice) SAT or ACT within the last 5 years? just for fun or to support your kids. If you did, how did you do? lol. I did very well on the math, but the English, let’s just say i wouldn’t get into T20 with that score
@Nhatrang. I am 58… No way…
So applied for my REAL ID today and they said they have to mail it to me. You get a temporary one when applying. I asked if I could pay more money for Fed ex or UPS… Lol… So. If anyone gets my driver’s license. Please PM me.
Re SAT/ACT: I suspect I would do great on the verbal portion – my vocabulary is much larger than when I was 17 – but I can guarantee you I’ve forgotten all the trigonometry I ever learned.
@knowstuff - how long did you have to wait in line for the real ID? I’ve been twice and both times was told they were no longer taking applications for the day…it was mid morning.
@nhatrang - I looked over some of my D’s practice ACTs but there would have been no way I would have scored high enough to get into my alma mater today. Certainly not in the time frame allowed ; )
@momofsenior1. I took the “El” and went downtown to the secretary of state in the bottom of the Thompson Center. I got there by 11:00 am or so. I left at 1:00 at the latest. Most of it was waiting (sitting), while they called your number for about an hour. Standing in line when I got there and going through the check-in and getting your picture taken was about another 30 minutes with 40 of your closest friends.
Plus then you can go shopping or somewhere for lunch or the art Institute for free till March 4th https://www.artic.edu/visit/free-admission-opportunities??
Thank you @Knowsstuff stuff! I tried the burb offices and that was a poor choice.
@momofsenior1 Yeah i do feel bad for the kids! S23 is taking full practice tests via Khan academy. He got 800 in math consistently but only got 640 on the English. The last 3 times with 3 different tests and he got the exact score!. The good news is he consistent and it’s not a fluke, the bad news is he is also consistent and the score is not a fluke He still has time but he doesn’t think time will help improving the English portion. And he is a big reader - reading 1-2 books a week on average for years.
He challenged me to take it and omg it was so hard. I did very poorly on the English part.
@Knowsstuff what is the benefit of getting “REAL ID”?
^ It’s going to be required for domestic flights. OR you can use your passport.

@Nhatrang. It’s what all the cool kids are doing these days… Lol…
As far as your son goes. Get a tutor for a “few” sessions. English was not my son’s thing. After like 2 sessions his score jumped. Something the tutor told him. Something about reading the answers first and some tips and tricks. It totally worked.
@Nhatrang : Is your son a native English speaker? Are you and his other parent?
My son was similar – 800 on the math portion twice, and 690 on the English both times. (Yes, he and his parents are native English speakers.) It didn’t matter, at the end of the day – his scores were in the ballpark to be admitted at a tough top school.
I think DW went to AAA to handle getting her Real Id license. Might be an option where you are, if you are a member.
@Nhatrang LOTS of wonderful colleges that would happily accept your son with those scores.
