Random ?'s About UC Santa Cruz

Is the hippy population too big? Does it rain a lot? How often is it foggy? How many people attend athletic events? How far is the closest beach where you can surf? What is the atmosphere like?

I'm just wondering if I should consider this school when it comes time to do my applications?

Definetly consider it! It's a beautiful campus, and in my opinion, the campus atmosphere is awesome, and each college seems very unique... Every time I go back (which has only been twice, so far), I find myself liking it more and more... I had the same fears about it having a reputation of being a "hippy school", but it doesn't seem like it really. There's a little bit of everything, and I don't think there are any "real" hippies, more like liberals. I don't see much of a difference between the type of people at UC Berkeley and the type of people here.

Is the hippy population too big?
define "too big" i don't think so, but i like hippies.

Does it rain a lot?
it's been raining for a good 5 weeks now. this is highly abnormal and I'm sick of it.

How often is it foggy?
all summer, and at nights sometimes the rest of the year.

How many people attend athletic events?
i've never been to any, nor have any of my friends afaik

How far is the closest beach where you can surf?
you can get there by bus in a half hour, car in 10 minutes.

What is the atmosphere like?
generally chill and relaxed.

I'm just wondering if I should consider this school when it comes time to do my applications?
that depends entirely on your interests, potential major, and the type of school you're looking for

it's been raining for something like 5 weeks in the silicon valley too =/
i think its definately not just santa cruz..

norcal had really rainy weather this year, i hear it switched this year with socal getting almost no rain and norcal getting pounded.

From an honest urban born californian:

Yes the hippy population is way to big. but they can be avoided if you
1 stay away from KRESGE/PORTER
2 If you dont go to any of that vegan health nut crap
3 if you just stay in college 9 or 10 the whole time

does it rain alot?
thats like asking if liberals are to wishy washy.
the answer is ofcourse yes. It rains alot. In fact over the spring we had a record 25 days or so of rain. it was lame.

is it foggy? in winter during the night...in summer more towards
sunrise.fog usually isnt to bad yo.

does anybody attend atheletic events?
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! we have athletics at this school???ahahahahahahahahahaha. Okay check it when you are 5'10 and 160 lbs and you look at what few frat boys there are here and you realize you could probably beat atleast 3 of them up by yourself, you can be assured there is little if any seriouse athletics going on.

the closest beach? well the crummy ones by the board walk and anything in town is what i like to call "heroin needle alley". but all the good beaches are just off highway one. watch out for gnar gnar white trash locals who like to slash students tires though.

The atmospher? well the school is pretty much like any other. Minus the stereotpyical stuff that you see at chico are UCSB. The city of Santa Cruz is like white trash druggy ghetto. Ive had untold numbers of crackheads and people on acid come up to me randomly while ive been at a skate spot. Not to mention i was at my friends house, whom lives off ocean street, about a week ago, when we heard gunshots down the block. See the thing is the neighborhood that he lives in still tries to put on this modest middle class front. Nothing is what it seems in SC.

The hippy popualation at UCSC is very small. I have only seen a few hippies on campus in general. But the things hippies stand for, like peace and love and community, ARE present, everywhere. Which is not a bad thing, if you ask me. Remember to approach every person you meet with an open mind! That's the most important advice I can give you. Don't be afraid of dreadlocks, which can actually be kept quite clean and do NOT smell. Most people shower.
