goodness... this sounds very similar to that other harvard thread that was hijacked

Well, if you dig in a bit you'll see exactly why both threads ended up being simultaneously hijacked by music discussion.

And come on, it's not like there's anything better to discuss in this thread :p

Haha. Yeah. I was talking about Spanish music, too. And then I mentioned mexican food on that other post, and it all went downhill from there. ;) Trust me, I do know the difference! haha

Yeah, my Why Penn essay is still just the question on the top of the page. I submitted Chicago yesterday! And Michigan! Hooray! And the rest are all done except this stupid essay. lol

haha yippee!! How many do you have again? And....where? :)

And so have you been to Spain or Mexico? lol because you were talking about Cancun, so I figured you were definitely talking Mexico...:p

lol and how about that never never land... cap'n hook. for a while i kinda amused myself thinking that never never land was in cancun

I liked the Harvard app - they didn't make you jump through hoops.

Why do you even have to answer a question like, "Why do you want to go to (whatevery Ivy or similar quality school here)?" What reason would you have to decline a great school?

I know!! The Harvard app was the best (same with Yale). One or two essays, each about whatever you want. Awesome :)

In my supplement essay I definitely got across "Why Harvard", just so they know my reasons are better than simply "because it's Harvard".

Haha. Middle Eastern and Spanish music go well together. I love the food and culture of Mexico. ;) I've been to Spain, too, though.

To Submit:
Notre Dame (done!)
Columbia (attach picture)
Johns Hopkins (done!)
Penn (Why essay and attach picture)

I need to prepare my CDs for all these schools, too. It's a pain.

For you guys applying to JHU with the common app, did you do both extra essays? I just did the $10 one, but I can do the other one, too, if all you guys think it's really important.

Also, Guitar, why are you applying to so many schools!?! And when are the due dates? I would have a break down! lol

I changed the thread title. Deceptive titles or other trickery is not allowed on CC.

Hahaha, thanks I think.

haha nice change in title :D And Middle Eastern and flamenco definitely go well together. I mean of course, they share a common root. The music of the Middle East was brought to Spain in the 800s or so with the Moors, where it fused with traditional gypsy music to make flamenco as we know it today.

As for JHU, I'm doing $10. The second one will be extremely easy to recycle from something I've written about research somewhere. After that, just Duke and Vandy.

And hey, nice change of the title :D:D lol

EDIT: BTW...I'm applying to a bunch of schools so I have a LOT of options come April, in case Harvard rejects me (lol Harvard accepting me would be the only way the choice would be simple). I really have no idea where I'll get in so I figure, why risk it? ;)

I had no idea what the hell happened when I suddenly saw this new thread with 2 pages already!

Hey should I do the four year masters degree program if I qualify? ;)

Haha that'd be so stressful on me, I bet.

Advanced Standing? haha well, it might be. I was considering it, but it would mean I'd have to fill up most of my electives with astronomy courses which is something I'm wary of. It's my life's passion but it's not my sole interest, and I'll have plenty of time to specialize that heavily in grad school and beyond. I find that the undergrad years are for getting both a strong background in your field and exploring all sorts of other things you're interested in. So why accelerate and specialize so quickly? :)

Plus, what good does a masters do? Well, OK, there might be some personal bias there, because a field like mine pretty much requires that you have a Ph.D. so a masters doesn't mean much :p I guess for others that's something more important to consider.

By the way, one more problem I have with that plan: If you want a masters (and possibly even a Ph.D. or other advanced degree), wouldn't it maybe be a good idea to go elsewhere? Right now I'm going through the college process and even though Harvard is easily my favorite, there are so many colleges that look like absolutely amazing places to simply be at! I figure maybe it would be cool to do the bachelors at one place, masters at another, and doctorate at a third. Sort of sample a bunch of different places, a la Bahcall :)

Since this is now the Random Stuff thread, I have a question:

How long should Why XXX essays be if no word length is specified? Does it need to be a full essay, or can I just write two or three paragraphs? I tend to be pretty concise, anyway...

However long you need ;)

If that's too vague (lol), probably the more concise, the better. Don't want to bore them!

I think I'll apply to MIT as a grad school if I want to get a PhD, but I don't expect to get in because I know how selective MIT's grad school is.

250 - 300 words.
