Ranking a few BA/MD programs

I was ranked 14th out of a class of 379; but many of my classmates were valedictorians or 2nd in their class. But keep in mind Phillips is well-known for being extremely difficult and if the school doesn't disclose rank, I don't think it would hurt you that much. Speaking of Phillips, I believe that two girls are coming to the program this year from Andover.

2!! WOW there are only like 25 spots. ;)

not exactly. they have a target size of 20-25; however, they actually accept around 60 to get that target size.

yea a couple of andover kids are attending the BU program, and im sure many are going to other great programs around the country... i think about 20 kids got into harvard this year. but yea im just curious because im unable to compare my status at andover to the selection factors stated by the combined programs

kpphy88
did u apply/were u accepted to any other similar programs?
exactly how difficult is it to get into one of these programs??
thanks

I applied to other programs, but this was the only one I got into. However, these programs are all generally very difficult to get into, as difficult as or more difficult than the Ivies and other top schools in terms of admission rates. Also, the academic stats of the avg. acceptee to a program are generally very high.

The year I applied to BU's program, around 550 applied, 100 were interviewed and 66 were accepted. From the 2006 Medical School Admissions Requirements (MSAR) book from the American Association of Medical Colleges, the entering class for the BU program in 2004 had an avg. unweighted gpa 3.91, class rank top 2%, SAT 1500 (out of 1600), Chemistry SAT II 730, Math IIC SAT II 760, Writing SAT II 740.

All this being said, admissions to medical programs, as with all the top schools, is somewhat unpredictable; there are just so many amazing and qualified kids that apply!

Good luck with the application process and feel free to ask any more questions. I remember when I was in your shoes; seems just like yesterday . . . lol.

alright well ive got under my belt:
SAT1 M 800, V 680 WR 700
IIC 800, Chem 760 Phys 760 Latin 700
5's in AP chem, calc, latin, physics.
how do these match up to ur credentials?
would you advise me to apply/ not apply to certain schools, if so, which?
thnks so mch.

you're more than fine academically; I think you're in the running for any of the programs, so long as your ECs and recs are in order. I believe that there's a full-tuition scholarship based on Latin also, so you might want to check that out on the admissions page.

haha thanks you have no idea how good that is to hear

I just finished my freshman year at University of Pittsburgh. I was fortunate to be accepted into both BU's program (accepts around 60) and Pitt's program. Pitt's program is an 8-year program that historically takes about 5 students a year, but in 2006, the new Dean took around 12. No MCAT, you get to major in whatever you want...all you have to do is keep a 3.7 gpa until the end of your junior year. All being said and done, I would've been happy at BU as well. Only thing was the cost of attending school in Boston for 7 years. I'm from Cleveland and Pitt offered me a full-tuition scholarship so it was the better deal. Medical school wise, Pitt is #15 and Boston is in the 30s I believe.

Medical programs are all fairly similar. It doesn't matter where you attend med school. What matters is how you do on your boards, your rank, and your extracurriculars once you get in. But I can say, all undergrads who are pre-med stress wayyyy more than anyone I know in a program.

well money isn't an obstacle for me. so id be more than happy to get into BU's, pitt's or any other program :-)

ok kpphy what other programs did u apply to? and do u know the names of the 2 people from phillips andover who u said were also in the program...im wondering if i know them.
thanks

Ky-anh Tran,
If you have specific questions, I can answer about DAP in Cincinnati. It is pretty open for out-of-state. They said that there are more applicants every year. But the number is not available. It is NOT accelerated, which some people prefer. Cinci. med. school has been renovated recently and ranks very high in pediatrics. You have choices of undergrad. college.
