Things can exist as things greater than 1 whole value of a standard unit. Harvard in this case should be like 1 Newton. Though Harvard probably is the only school at the moment with a ranking greater than or equal to 1000 milliharvards, it shouldn’t be the definition that no place but Harvard can have that score.

The mH is the new Mole. (Currently majoring in Prestigiosity hoping to be a Prestigiositist like the ones that work in USNews)

I feel it should be the definition but I suppose Hunt will have to weigh in, if he still cares, since he created the term :D

From the very first post in this thread:
Stanford is having a nice little run right now, as it periodically does. This is why I give it such a high rating in the first place. Perhaps, someday, the Stanford brand will catch up with the Harvard brand here on CC. But don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

Just as an example: when people are discussing super-selective colleges in general, and want to give an example, it is much more likely that they will use “Harvard” than any other school, or probably any other 10 schools combined. This is, of course, based on my impressionistic (yet highly scientific) recollection of a zillion threads here on CC.

^ You are funny (serve righ on target of this thread ) … Stanford is already running ahead of Harvard; it doesn’t need to ‘catch up’… I am laughing out loud!

“Harvard” has twice as many hits on Google as “Stanford.” 'Nuff said.

^ Are you talking about the total hits (replies) on CC? If so Cornell has way more hits than Harvard - 270,000 vs. 210,000.

Oops, you said ‘on Google’ in your post… sorry, I missed that part earlier because I thought you continue to base things on CC! Now, care to share the source regarding number of hits on Google?

I think for at least until 2020, Harvard will probably be the first school that comes to mind while thinking of prestigious universities. In the next decade, Stanford could possibly tie Harvard.

Rankings (based on my impressions):
Harvard
Yale, Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Wharton
Columbia
Chicago, Brown
Dartmouth, rest of Penn, Duke
Cornell, NW, Vandy
GTown, UMich, UVA, Tufts, WUSTL, UC Berkeley, maybe a few more

However, there’s a noticeable drop after the HYPSM among the layperson. My bias is probably showing here since I’m an aspiring investment banker/trader.

^Younger people don’t seem to think so even today - there is no need to wait for a decade.

New York Times
<a href=“Riding Technology Wave, Stanford Rises to Top of Some Measures - The New York Times”>Riding Technology Wave, Stanford Rises to Top of Some Measures - The New York Times;

Lay Prestige (in my opinion):

Tier 1a - Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT
Tier 1b - Columbia, Caltech (people who have heard about it) and Wharton
Tier 2a - Dartmouth, Duke, Penn (excluding Wharton)
Tier 2b - Brown, Cornell, Berkeley
Tier 3 - Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Chicago, Northwestern, WUSTL, Georgetown, USC, UCLA

^ I think if anyone wants to ask to compare these top schools in America, the good high school counselors who are dealing with prospective students for top schools everyday are the most credible.

This is how award winning high school counselors rank them:
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/high-school-counselor

1 Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Yale (Alphabetic)

7 Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Penn

12 CalTech, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt

19 Northwestern, Chicago, William and Mary, Emory, Rice, Tuffs, UCLA, North Carolina – Chapel Hill, UVA, Washington U in St. Louis

I know you said #1 and #19 is only 0.3 out of 5 difference in other thread. But if we convert this to a scale of 100, we have #1 at 98, #7 at 96, #12 at 94, #19 at 92. May be just the difference of A+ and A-?

Eh yeah. I think it might take a few more years for UChicago’s lay prestige to match its overall status now. It didn’t really start marketing itself and become a “sexy” school until recently. The whole “where fun comes to die” thing hurt the school, maybe. I think in another 5-10 years, it will easily be included in the discussion with Columbia.

^ It is equally possible that students will wise up to the whole marketing thing and the number of applicants will continue to plummet (they experienced a 9.5% decrease this year).

I would simply note that those attempting to inject facts into this thread are missing the point.

^Agreed. And thanks for just pointed out there are facts on this page even though most are fictions. haha.

I feel like Brown is very underrated. In my part of the woods (NY) Brown is slightly more respected than dartmouth from what I’ve seen.

My personal rankings:
HYPSM
(noticeable drop)
Columbia, Caltech
Chicago, Penn, Brown
Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell
NW, JHU, Vandy, GTown, UMich, UVA, maybe a couple more

I’m going off of my own observations in elite companies (i.e. Goldman, JPMorgan, Mckinsey, Bain, etc.) and elite graduate programs. Among lay prestige, schools are very regional and in a neutral area (i.e. Colorado), everything except HYPS and maybe MIT is pretty unknown from my experience if the school doesn’t have a D1 sports team.

In a global point of view, not in any order, the most respected and prestigious American colleges are:
Yale
Princeton
Wharton Penn
Harvard
Georgetown SFS
Stanford
Caltech
MIT

So I went through and used actual number (pseudoscientifically, of course!). Here’s what I got- you probably won’t have too hard a time figuring out what numbers I used:
