I just found out that my school doesn't weigh GPAs or ranks among difficulty levels. The regular classes and the advanced classes all rank their students on the same list. No one in advanced has an average above 94ish and all of the smart people in regular have 98,99 because it's so much easier. If I want to apply to Ivies, will they know the level or difficulty of my classes if the course code on the report card is the same? If I drop to regular will they know? And if I go to regular and take APs next year in grade 12 even though they are meant for grade 12 advanced, will this be better? Right now my class tank is probably 30+/400 because of this.

Also, I’m taking advanced physics but it’s really hard and the class avg is in the 60s. If I drop to regular in this class, will it really hurt my chances of getting into an Ivy?

They’ll find out about the lack of weighting in the school profile. One thing that adcoms constantly stress is course rigor, so taking harder classes is definitely in your favor.

I’m definitely not an adcom, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

They will definitely see what courses (if they are AP, Honors, Regular) so it would not be wise to drop down to easier classes. They’d much rather see high course rigor than higher gpa. Your class rank system is screwed up, but the last thing I would do is to drop down.

Thanks guys! I really needed that reassurance to stick with my path. Some people think that this is so stupid, but I know that even Canadian schools (I live in Canada, lol) do care about rigor.

And I’ve also looked at it this way: I probably won’t get into an Ivy (even if I do, I probably won’t go because it’s SO expensive and my family won’t get too much financial aid… there are a lot of people better than me who need it more), and worst case scenario is that I won’t get a HUGE scholarship to a Canadian school. I’ve talked to people who’ve been in this program and they say you go to university REALLY prepared. I’m happy for that!
