RD decisions?

Caity-

Wherever your son goes, he will have easy access to alcohol. You’re going to have to trust him to make the right decisions. Especially if he hasn’t had discipline issues yet, you are probably safe to allow him to make his own decisions. You’ve got to realize that unless he goes to BYU, it will be his decision whether or not he drinks (or binge drinks).

My sister goes to Wake, and I got in last week. Remember, Wake is full of really smart people. Yes, drinking is prevalent, but they’re smart about it (at least when compared to schools like Bama, Ole Miss, Hampden Sydney, etc.).

So whether it’s Furman or Wake, recognize that it doesn’t matter. If you deny him the chance to go to Wake for “drinking issues”, you’re telling him “Honey, we just can’t trust you.” If you’re willing to pay for both of those schools, then please, let him decide for himself. It’s his life.

Caity - Also consider the importance of the sports culture to your S. I have a S at BC and D will be at WF next year. Both wanted to be at schools that had big time sports and the associated school spirit. ACC sports is a huge part of S’s college life and fun at BC. WF has that to offer, too.

I can very much empathize with your son. I too applied to Wake, ND, and BC not only for their great academic reputations but also the huge sports following associated with those universities. A good football team is important to me. (And other sports as well)

If you are that concerned about your son drinking, then I am sure that you have made positive impact on him and taught him the right things to do. He is not going to drink himself silly the minute you let him walk out the door.

And to everyone else saying Wake has drinking problems, it is called COLLEGE, people!!!

Accepted, from Oregon, will be attending! Anyone else notice that there are NO summer ‘meet and greet’ sessions scheduled anywhere west of the Mississippi? It would be nice to have at least one centrally located, say San Francisco?

Oh gosh Caizzacuz17 we just hang out here while we’re cooking your dinner, or doing your laundry, or trying to figure out how in the world we are going to pay for a first-class education for you at a place such as Wake. But don’t mind us.

HaHaHa good one smbsmom!!!

Caity - drinking is an issue on most if not all college campuses. There are so many factors to consider when choosing a college - please don’t let a misconception about drinking at Wake be the deciding factor. My son has had a wonderful first year at Wake - we are so happy he is there. I trust him to make good choices and as far as I know, he has done so. It is a wonderful academic environment and a great school if you like sports. Frankly, between classwork, intermural sports, his job, etc., I don’t think he has a lot of time or energy left over to party. The ones who get very drunk get the attention - but it really is a small percentage of the student population. Just hoping you will reconsider your position. Feel free to pm me with any questions I can help you with.
